I was driving back from a hockey game last night, and we were about to drive over a bridge covering the Mississippi River, and the person in front of us went from like 30 MPH to 10 MPH. And I thought, why do people slow down on bridges, when if it collapses, it just increases the chances that we die. I would fucking floor it all the way across man. Do you agree?

I would just drive the speed limit posted...the person who slowed down is an idiot...but if you floor it over a bridge your also an idiot

no.  i dont feel like a bridge is going to colapse when im driving over one.   You are saposed to slow down on most bridges because and accident on a bridge could stop traffic both ways for a couple hours.

I agree with both of you, but I also think you shouldn't be driving 10 over a really old bridge.

Obviously you're a new driver.

A little hint for you for your future. Bridges tend to ice over, even when the rest of the road is fine. This is because the earth can keep the road warm(er), but there is nothing that keeps bridges warm. So water that might have been picked up on the main road, can be dropped off on a bridge, and freeze quickly. I'm not sure what you're weather was like that the time, but I think Minnesota weather has been less than perfect in the last 24 hours. The person in front of you was a more experienced driver, who was being cautious in a situation that could have caused an accident. Lear from them.

sorry for the dub post but to clear up what i said.  Im talking more like the bridges in the bay area.  With the ammount of comuting that happens on those bridges, an accident could be a huge hassle.   Plus im sure hitting a support beam could be a pretty costly repair.  So you got to be cautious on bridges.

Did your dad slow down along with the other person? If he did, pay attention. He's probably been driving a while, and also realized the situation. Pay attention to that kind of stuff, you never know, it might save your life.

its smart to slow down befor going on to a bridge. Black Ice likes to form there and sometimes wind gusts are insane over bridges. I've watched a semi flip on the 15N in CA before because of the santa ana winds.

Its also usually smart to slow down in a tunnel as well. Infact, the speed limit in longer tunnels is usually significantly less based on the fact that an accident that occurs in a tunnel is usually a lot worse cause the car bounces off the walls and such. At a higher speed this is way more dangerous and if you are driving above the speed limit and following too closely, you may not be able to stop causing it to be your fault if you hit the other vehicle. So yeah, important to be cautious in tunnels. Watch the movie Day Break, shits scary.

yeah bridges can be more dangerous because theyre not insulated by the ground like most roads are. that said, if youre not exaggerating, 10 mph is reallly slow.
