I have a question.

On the JOSS contest page they say: "on February 22nd, the three highest rated entries will be announced as Team Newschoolers, and will head to Åre." What this "highest rated" actually means? Is it the highest score, or the average of given ratings? Right now LJ's edit is leading with 9.59 and on the Rules page they say: "Anyone found giving their own entry a 10 and other entries a 1 -- will be disqualified." This refers that the edit with the highest average rating will win. Is it so? Because if it is, it's also possible to post an edit during the last few minutes, get one 10 rating and win. Or is there something I haven't noticed?

Even with the average thing, the system still has huge flaws. As in, upload a vid just before due time, get your friends, relatives, who ever (as many votes as you need to get to the minimun amount of voters), to vote ten for you and win. By doing this at the very last minute no one has time to rate a bad video with the real rating it deserves. Does that even make any sense? hahaa

But how is that fair? Let's say only 100 people vote for you and you get a 10 from everyone, while someone else gets 10 000 votes with an average of 9.35. By your logic the one with the perfect score wouldn't get in?

I have talked to NS and they are working on whatever flaws the system has, they will sort things out asap...

Also talked to a lot of the pros, some very interesting edits should be dropping in very soon!

Yeah, I don't wanna argue about things I have no other reliable info on except for the posted rules, but I hope the NS team would specify the exact rules so there won't be any sourpusses after the voting has ended.

It seems to me that the best alternative would be to change the voting system so that every member (id address tracking and cheating surveillance) would have a chance to give points from 1 to 10 for each edit. That would eliminate the possibility of the mentioned average-related flaws the current voting system has. Granted that no system is totally fair and unbreakable.

Another option would be to put a time limit to upload all the edits and once the time would elapse, the voting would be on for a limited time. But in my opinion this option isn't as reliable as the first one.

The voting has already started and the rules have been set so I don't know if there's much to do here anymore, but I hope the organizing parties come up with something trustworthy!

I foresee a big drawback/deterant to entering is travel expenses for the am/semi-pro and their filmers. These guys are out there working hard on their own dime and most of the time don't have the funds from their sponsors or personal $$ to shoot off to Sweden even if it is an amazing oppurtunity. Getting taken care of once there is awesome but the $1.5k plane and travel is bigtime for anyone. Hopefully that doesn't hurt the level of people going for this. It's sick Jon put this in the event and is extending the opputunity.

Call me a realist/negative Nancy, but it's just my 2 cents. Don't get me wrong I'm stoked to see some young bucks getting a chance. AMs add more life and variety to pro events, not that pros aren't stoked to be there, just adds some more to it. Remember Ahmet, T-Wall in the JOI like 4 years ago?

You're basing your traveling expense theory ($1500?) on the fact that everyone chosen to JOSS is from halfway across the globe I guess? Don't jump the gun yet. In tha case, let's take LJ for example:why  wouldn't his sponsors be willing to dish out even that kind of amount as a joint effort to get him to represent their brands in as large a venue as JOSS?

yea, and the way I see it... sponsored or not - if you win and have this opportunity of a LIFETIME, who in their right mind would decline because of the cost of the plane ticket? There's always a way to get that money together. If you can't than you don't deserve to go. straight up.

and that's your own damn fault for being that poor, and for that you don't deserve to go. you make as much money as you choose to make. and with this 20-40$$/week food budget, what, may I ask is your partying budget? how much do you spend a week on beer, eating out, weed, random shit, etc....


most of the people I know that claim they are poor and can't afford to do things just drink to much, or don't put the effort in to make enough money for what they want to do in life, and that is just, well a very immature way of living your life.


And if you are that poor, as I said - there are ways of getting money. parents, credit cards, sell shit... money isn't that hard to come by if you really want it.

because they can't scrounge up the cost of a plane ticket? What's your logic in that? Yeah, it's a great opportunity and a great time but the cost of travel could be someone's rent for the next 3 months.

Do you even know what a real budget is?

Not trying to hate but "you make as much money as you choose to make" is a complete asinine statement and frustrating. I'm not one to assume too much but I'm going to go out on a limb and say you haven't lived on your own yet and been in a tough spot economically.

Forgive my rant on a subject that isn't at all relating to the original thread topic...

Well, to put some kind of "cheap" factor to flying into Sweden, I live about 1-2 hours flight away from Stockholm and the flight cost me 20 euros.

Somebody came here from Bangladesh for only about 100 euros. From Italy for 50 euros.. etc. I'm sure you can get a flight to Sweden from North America for way less than the amount you assumed here by looking in the right place.

Exactly. We agree with your concerns, and when we set this contest up I didn't anticipate this being much of an issue, as I figured people would be getting their videos up quickly so they could score as many votes as possible as opposed to dropping their edits last minute.

As a result, Jon and I are in the midst of formulating a game plan to ensure that the outcome of this contest is 100% fair and legitimate, and rest assured that we'll be letting you all know what we decide in regards to the voting process. The most likely scenario is that we'll delete all the current votes and close the voting system until the deadline, at which point we'll close the contest to new entries and open it up to voting where we'll give you guys a week to vote for your favorite vid, so every entry gets their fair and equal opportunity to obtain votes.

In regards to the giving of 10 to one entry and 1 to all the others, those votes will be deleted, since it's cheating, no matter how you look at it. So please think twice before you do that for your favorite athlete, because your vote won't count.

I could get into my life history, but that's neither here nor there.

It's just like, if someone entered the contest on a whim and ended up actually winning. Them saying "I would love to go, but I can't afford the plane ticket" is probably the lamest excuse in the world. It could very well be the opportunity of a LIFETIME (as I stated earlier).

When there were talks about Andreas' home set up earlier in the year I got hated on for talking about the cost of building it, blah blah blah.


I'm saying it's all relative man. sure, what Andreas built probably cost a pretty penny, but it's not unachievable... to someone who has nothing to gain, sure, it would be way too much money and not worth it, but as we can see - his investment is working out wonderfully, and for that reason - his home park set up wasn't that crazy of an expenditure.

Same applied to JOSS. Sure, $1500 is a chunk of cash, but it's almost unarguably the BEST competition ever, I know that if I had the opportunity to do it, nothing would stop me from finding that money... even if I had to go into debt to get it, it would be worth every penny of interest.

I agree with you to a point, but some people cannot scrounge even that amount in such a short time. I would not sell my house/car/large appliance just for two weeks in Sweden, no matter how good of an opportunity it was considering the small amount of money in the ski industry at the moment. Win Dew Tour, ok, you've got it dialed and a shitload of cash; win a small rail slopestyle with awesome tricks and get $500 for your efforts, it still won't go far.

I hear what you're saying. I just think you're presenting in a total douche way. Malcyzk is right and so is Dan. The $1500 is a lot of money for anyone. Hell, I'd love to drop $1500 on a plane ticket to Sweden to hang out with Schmuck and Cheech for 2 weeks but why would I when that $1500 can go much further elsewhere?

Most of the pro's NS has been naming make less than $15k a year. Sure $1500 might be a small fraction of that overall but these guys are picking up there own travel and food expenses when they're on a film trip and sometimes heading to contests.

I think your argument would have more merit if it was phrased differently.

And to get back on topic, I'd really like to see LJ head to Sweden with either Team America or Team NS.

In my opinion there is no solution to internet voting and you just gotta make the best of it...

As long as the playing field is even, then nobody has a disadvantage. I think putting LJ's entry as video of the day could be considered an advantage or disadvantage depending on the circumstances. If more people see the video and vote on it (and those votes count towards the contest) then he will have an edge, but what if the votes on the video of the day video don't count towards the contest and 100 or so people don't watch his JOSS entry because they already seen it?

People will cheat the system no matter what you do, the best thing is making sure everyone has the same conditions to do so.

My short 2 cents on this whole thing:

The idea is sick but so far, there are maybe 2 or 3 legit entries, at the most, of kids who could actually ski and perform at joss.

NS is obviously the right outlet to find dope unknown skiers for joss, but those kids arent going to get picked. Top am/pro skiers like LJ will be picked because they are just better and have more experience.

I'm not saying its a bad idea, its just developing, but i guess we'll wait to judge how to contest is until its actually over and the skiers are picked. Stoked NS and Jon are giving kids a chance to go to JOSS tho. Hopefully some rando euro kid out of no where just fucks our minds and slays joss.
