Is Shawn White really this important?

During the Olympic opening ceremony the commentators talked about Shawn White when the U.S. team was entering the arena. They kept on talking about him with the camera on him straight over Uzbekistan's entrance. Uzbekistan got zero recognition. If I was Uzbekistan I would be fucking pissed.

the thing is shaun white is a minority. look at a dude like danny kass. obviously hes not as rich and famous in the outside world but in the snowboarding world he is. he does not act like a douchebag and he is respected, not clowned on.

I don't get what everybody's beef is with Shaun White.  At least he'll get the US a gold.  And he is no doubt the best competitor in the sport, no one else even close to what he is doing.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but why all the hate?

He is a douche, that is very true, but i hate when people say he is overrated when he isnt, snowboarding is a popular sport, people praise him so much because he is the most successful boarder of the sport, he isnt overrated

Not every country has a camera crew for every event, most get a video feed from other companies. The US has CBS, which dumps a silly amount of $$ into the production aspect of the Olympics so they have their own crews for every event, There are others such as the EBU that will send a video feed to other countries with their own commentators. I would imagine other countries would go with EBU footage because it will be less biased towards a single country and probably cheaper.

I'm really fucking competitive and not just in skiing, a lot of other sports, and if someone beats me and I couldn't shake there hand and say good job dude and be friends with them after it, I'd be the biggest fucking whining baby in the world. As a red haired person and I skier I can say that shaun whites image has had a negative influence on my life. Every person I talk to that knows I go to the mountains every weekend thinks that I snowboard and like snowboarding so I hear all their shit about snowboarding.

I really don't see anything wrong with the quote. He is giving incredible props to another rider and acknowledging that he pushed shaun to a higher level. I don't see it as a dick comment. I don' see why people hate on this guy, he is the most dominant snowboarder in the world. People should be happy that someone has attained such an incredible level of success in the sport. If he comes off as arrogant, which I really don't think he does, that arrogance is not baseless. He is the best snowboarder in the world, has dominated the sport since he was 13, and he knows it. Good for him, he has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is today.

It's because he's making it about himself and not Kevin Pearce.

He's like "Oh, it was great, because it helped me." He should have talked about Kevin Pearce IMO. I didn't read the article so I don't know if he talked about him later, though.
