AVI file for final cut pro 7 +++K for help

Hey I use final cut pro 7 with my canon HF 20 and i want to put my friends clips from his helmet cam into final cut but when i try to or even play them with quicktime it says CODEC not found ,. how can i get these AVI files to work in my final cut????

Download MPEG Streamclip I think that can convert avi to mov

It shouldnt when done right but I havent done it first hand so I couldnt tell you. Give it a test and see, let me know too because this could come in helpful in the future.

my final cut does that too, one of two things could help you out. 1) make sure your camera is plugged into your computer and turned on BEFORE you open up final cut...2) what I do is import my footage into Imovie, export as a quicktime movie and then re-import into finalcut by that. it takes a while, but at least you can trim your clips in Imovie before you import to finalcut...hope this helps

Have to tried using the log and transfer feature inside of FCP7? Should be under File < Log and Transfer. Either have your camera plugged in through firewire, or transfer the contents of the card into a folder within your project folder and open those clips. Should transfer fine into a more editable codec such as Apple ProRes.

If that doesn't work MPEG Streamclip, like someone said above will work. Best thing is that it's free, download here http://www.squared5.com/. I use to use mpeg streamclip to convert my dslr footage to a codec that would be accepted in FCP7. Never had an issue with loss in image quality, just make sure you match all of your settings from your native video. MPEG Streamclip is easy to use, but if you have trouble figuring it out I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials on how to use the software on YouTube. Hope this helps!

Also just curious as to what make and model helmet cam your friend is using?
