yeah really.

i dont think some of these people can grasp the concept that a knife or leatherman is VERY practical to have around in certain circumstances.

i dont even know how many times a day i use my knife while working. or bailing hay, (ide like to see half this site go do something like that( side note) a knife is uber practical.

i understand kids carry around knives for work. witch yeah is necessary depending on where you work and shit. i used to do it when i had to open packages all the time at work.

but kids that carry pocket knives for protection are dumb. for one dont carry it unless you will actually use it not just pull it out for show and act hard. another thing is that if you pull it out on the wrong person you could get stabbed or even worst shot . 

getting a knife pulled on you at a party is funny. you shouldnt be trying to fight someone if you cant do it with just your fists.

Does anyone own a Damascus blade? I've heard so much about them but I've never been able to hold one, even when there was a knife / gun expo a few months ago, the Damascus's sold out almost instantly.

I agree, it's ridiculous for a kid to carry around a knife when he has no practical uses for it.
And I'll admit, when I got my first knife I didn't have any real need for it, I just wanted a knife. But I keep it in my pocket all the time, and find myself using it constantly. And now I wouldn't think of going anywhere without it. As long as the people around you know, and are comfortable with you having one, I think it's perfectly fine to have one for any reason, it's a free country. But it's incredibly dumb just to have one for "self protection" when you live in the suburbs.

I have a Chinese Police urban survival dagger that has bolt cutters, a gut hook, two saws, a screwdriver with 6 bits, a slingshot, a spring loaded glass punch, a whetstone, flint, a first aid kit and a fishing kit all build somewhere into the blade or holster. 

I also have a Kukhri (sp?) from India with a yak bone handle, a gnarley hammered out blade with a see through sheath, also from india, and a WWII sword

I completely agree, if your carrying a knife for protection, the ONLY time you bring it out is a second before your going to "use" it.
Not the best self defense weapon because if you miss your very likely to get shot, and/or stabbed right back.

Practical beyond all belief, I'll get some pictures of mine up later...

I also have a 4" mustang sheath knife that i carry around when i'm working, hunting, or fishing. It has a shitty blade thats hard to sharpen but it sure keeps the edge once you can get it there.

I am currently making two sheath knives out of some deer antler. I've got one blade on the way and i'm going to see how it fits before i order the other one. I hope to use one for strictly hunting/skinning and the other for fishing/general work. I'm going to make a belt sheath and I want to experiment with an Avatar-esque chest sheath.

I'll post pics up once I'm done with them.

i dont know anyone in real life that i expect to own more than 2 knives (except for people with fishing/hunting licenses).

i dont know whats up on NS. wearing a knife for protection doesnt do shit unless your trained to use it.

Just because I own a knife doesn't mean I carry it. It mostly just sits in my drawer at my desk. I probably use it about 3 times a week though. And I've had a multitool in my car since I was 16.

i usualy have one on me at all times. just used to it from work. but i lose one about every month so i just buy them jrom pawn shops for about 2 bucks a pop. i look for about 3 inch blade, and it HAS to have a strong metal clip

Shit dude, that's ridiculous. I've never lost a knife, I try really hard to keep them looking good and working and not lost.
The metal clip thing is soo annoying though. The Coast knife I have is ridiculous, it's clip isn't tight at all, and it almost falls out of my pocket a ton. Which is why I generally only carry my CRKT.
