First time skiing "pow"

First off let me just say that I can't believe I've missed out on this sensation for this long. You guys out west are pretty dang lucky. Anyways, had a snowday today in southwest Michigan and went out to my local hill and skid 9 inches of fresh snow. I know it's not even that much but it's probably the most fun I've had skiing, in fact I was only in the park for a couple laps and decided that I'd rather ski some fresh snow instead. Kind of want to move out west now.

You don't even understand how true pow skiing feels. If you like skiing pow in michigan, you'd go crazy in utah or mt.

my first good pwo day was so epic. christmas eve, stevens pass WA, I was on my dynastar nuthin but trbles and skied those things harder in the pow than anyone has ever skied powder on fat skis. epic day

prior to this January, the deepest i had ever skied was probably about 18".

I went out west for a week in late January and skied some epic pow, shoulder deep on one trail and waist deep for quite a few runs. i had the most epic day / week of my life skiing pow, an unforgettable feeling that is making me move out to UT next season.

I skied about 2 feet of snow up at Big Sky at 3 weeks ago and it was just insane. First time ever skiing snow where I felt like I was floating and it is just something you cannot describe in words.

dang... i've never really had the funds to head out there, i've just been stuck hittin urban and my hill's little park. But next year i'll have to save up to take a trip out there

i havent enjoyed pow much since i decided to center mount.... gotta invest in some fat skis, i miss the floating feeling too much to give it up for rails and ice.

usually, but not the Mid-Atlantic this year. we usually get about 6 inches a year, but this year we've gotten around 75", smashing all of the prior records.

one of the best days ive had: 10-12in light fluffy fresh on top of whistler peak. about 15 degrees up there. got into the bowls on the west side of the main north south ridge and out along it on the west side... holy shit that feeling is the best ive ever had. thigh deep in the trees. it was so light i could ski it easily with my park skis. and just faceshots faceshots faceshots!!! i even inhaled some and almost choked! im stoked now cuz my mountain is getting the first significant snowfall in a month and i get to ski it friday! yes powder is the best thing since sex (maybe even better)

Take 10 EC Park rats(like myself), bring them out west and force them to ski Big Mtn lines and I dare to  say that 90% wouldn't want to go back to rails with bullet-proof snow.

opening day last season and the season before, 90+ inches of un skied snow. last 60 inches or so came in about a week.

skied my first real pow this season too 11in at killington. those two days were the best days of my life. I can never go back to skiing ice on small mountains again.

Haha, I love how as soon as a thread appears about pow we suddenly see no hate or even arguing whatsoever. Everyone is just stoked even if they aren't getting any pow themselves!

I have had 3 sick pow days this year which is pretty good for being in school. Sunshine, Whistler and Mt.Washington.

I'm live in RI and i ski NH and i've actaulyly got 2 decent pow days this year, first with around 6 in and the next with 5 with around 12in in the glades, im so pumped to go to utah over feb break though, it'll be my first time there.

skied a couple feet of powder in tahoe a couple yeras ago.  so much fun.  glad to say im going to utah next year for college so ill be skiing much more than in CT

Park is so much fun when there isn't good snow, but nothing compares to a pow day. Comgrats on losing your P-card!

i skied just over a foot on opening day this year and havent had many other gnarly pow days like last year.  last year in Alta over 3 days it snowed 18" then 19" then 17". best time of my life. cant wait to go cat skiing this year in mustang.

that is great for you, but are you aware of the averages of mountains out west? UT/WY have about 50-60% of normal snowpack and there's been over 260" so far...

yeah you need to go out west. im from MIDWEST michigan.

i went out to utah for 10 days over x-mas break this year and i was there during a good storm. even if you are not skiing pow it is nice to just be able to stretch your legs and ski 2000ft vertical.

but then the snow comes and it is insane how dedicated the people are to get pow. earning your turns, waiting at the gates for ski patrol to open the resort slackcountry up.

The worst day in Utah was better than the best day in Michigan.

Smog? Cry me a river, and drive a Prius and park it at the canyon entrance and ride the bus up.

skiing third at cburg is haha, oh man.

you just need to go out west man. get a map of snowbird out and look at the road to provo and mineral basin.

there is like 1700ft of vertical bowl skiing there and if you are lucky and its dumped out those areas will be cakes in powder. i just about pooped myself when i saw how much powder was right there and untouched.


the funny thing is even the like 6 year olds are drooling over powder too i swear. probably lose a kid they sink in the snow deep enough out there.

I can't imagine what Challenger at Solitude would be like on a powder day.

All of this is relative to the snow not being tracked out.


I came back to Michigan and I honestly could just give a fuck about skiing here anymore. its just not fun. the only thing to look forward to is the shitty parks we have.

if you like parks go to park city and look at their park and all the unused features just waiting to be put up. you'll be writing letters to PCMR with pics of the feature in it begging them to set it up.
