Colleges + Ski Resort +?

okay, Im going to college in a year and im looking at my choices. I am in indiana now and ski at 3 different resorts that all make there own snow! But I want to go out west for college or somewere like Maine or Vermont. The question I have is I want some info on colleges that are like 30-45 minutes away to a good ski resort. Like University of Boulder Colorado. does anyone have any other colleges?

Been born and raised here in Bozeman, got my undergrad in Civil Engineering, and I'm now going to grad school here for structural engineering. If you're looking for hotties, MSU is probably not the best bet, but the girls that are here are generally pretty active and badass. However I'm an engineer so I never really see girls anyways.

Definitely don't base the decision solely on skiing, you'll hate your life later if you're in debt and have a degree that you hate.

However for skiing:  Bridger is bad ass. Don't come here if you only want to jib, big sky/moonlight are a longish drive (~1hr to big sky and ~1.2 to moonlight therefore no weekday skiing unless you have the whole day off) and their parks don't have shit for jumps anymore just rails (as you can tell I don't care much for rails but if that's all you want there are a lot of better parks imo). Bridger "park" has several rails too but you'd have to be kinda dumb to ski it if you looked up the hill or to the boundaries.

And as far as time to get to bridger: 15min=dry roads no traffic, 20min = typical, 30min = pretty icy, 45min = 40" powder day at 8:30 am. For the last 4years I've skied ~75days freshman year, ~85 sophemore, 93 junior, 87 senior, and on my way to ~90 this year.

I don't know shit about other places but I'd say MSU is definitely worth checking out in person.

you guys at the top are retarded... its the university of colorado - boulder, theres also university of colorado - denver and neither of them are a full 2 hours away, depending on where you go. i live just outside denver and i ski at keystone brek and a basin and its like an hour and 20 minutes away. if your looking for an actual good mountain town, go to ft. lewis in durango. the pow if rediculous down there, wolf creek just got 3 ft a couple days ago, and purgatory which is actually in durango is pretty descent, i havent been for 2 years but their park was alright

Utah is a staunchly republican state.

And a census in 2004 as per a wiki article (That is cited to a govt pdf) said that 53% of residents in SL County were Mormon.

I am not saying that I think the whole state is like holy fucking shit Mormon.But you moved from Montana to SLC eheath, can you say that you notice any difference from city to city? You sound like you have been around (reno, etc)...

I am not arguing over SLC's mormon population, I am just trying to better understand.

to the OP. I visited the state, skiing is awesome, college looks good from what I read. Traffic can be a bit rough during peak hours, but given the size of SLC the traffic does get around pretty smooth. If you have never seen smog before, you will there. SLC is pretty poorly rated for air quality if that is of concern. Although inversions seem common in mountain areas from what I read. Unemployment rates are low especially in comparison to say living out in washington where the cost of living is not only higher, crime rates are higher, but unemployment is higher also. People suck ass at driving in Utah also, but you step up that defensive driving right?

I want to move to SLC because it does have the right college with the right skiing........and the right industries to support a variety of jobs. I'll take my chances with the smog,

Colorado Mountain College has a campus that is like 10 minutes from Breck. It's a 2 year program right now, but a bill is in the senate to make it a 4 year by the time fall semester starts.

UMaine Farmington.

30 to Sugarloaf, 40ish to Saddleback, and I think 45ish to Sunday River.

Titcomb is on the outskirts of town, but it's tiny, it does offer night skiing I believe.

Fort Lewis is the shit.Im here for my freshman year and it is awesome. Purgatory (Durango mtn)is 30 mins away, Silvertons an hour, Wolf Creek is an hour and a half, Telluride is 2 hrs, and Taos is 3 hrs. Plus all the amazing BC up on Red Mtn Pass and Molas.

If you want an awesome school, and have great skiing, definitely look here

to those who from east coast scared of what living in slc would be just go for it, Im at westminster and choosin this place so far seems like I made the right choice. Literally 80-90% of the campus is super stoked for ski season.  part me thinks none of these other schools mentioned have a community so engaged in mountain and climbing activities as they are here.  I've met just as many kids from east coast as I have utah residents
p.s. - we party in slc too.

Westminster in SLC is great if you want a smaller school in Utah. If your gonna go to a Pac-12 its gotta be Washington anyway Utes are gay.

Jahh, Westminey is a sick school, not a lot females which sucks but everyone skis. Small school with an average class size 18, the most for me is 21 and that's chemistry. Fun parties, but fuck 3.2% beer! Go to the U or westminster, 30 mins away from PC, Snowbird, Alta, and Brighton and all the mountains in between.

If you like the Idea of the U or just the SLC in general, check out Westminster College. Its a Private Liberal Arts school that about a 5 minute bus ride from the U. It only has around 3k students, so if you don't wana go to a massive school like the U then look into it.

Dont think because its Private Liberal Arts school in Utah that its a yuppy LDS school either, Westminster has Zero religious affiliation and is the only Wet campus in Utah.

First off Western is a state college, not a community college. 2nd, I was personally accepted to both schools, went to both and have friends who did the same. Obviously CU is a better school in most respects, it's a university and costs twice as much.

 best ski college in my opinion is u of utah @ salt lake city. i believe tom wallisch went there? not sure. utah is best bet tho. also my home resort of arizona snowbowl is smaller but definitely a sick resort and its supposed to expand soon. northern arizona university is 15 minutes away

I was told by a friend that goes there that the mo mo situation is not even noticeable at the U because most of the mo mos in the area end up at BYU and all the mo mos that don't go to BYU and end up at the U instead are all the less serious mo mos. Pending what kind of scholarship offers I get my plans so far are to go to the U and be within a quick drive of some sick mountains.

I can also vouch for Boise State though since I'm in Boise and about a quarter of my high school's graduates end up there each year. Boise is an awesome city with a lot to do in and around it, including Bogus, which is very fun and very close.

UC Davis is only 2 hours away from Tahoe, and UNR is only about 30-45 min away. Plus if you aren't from California then you'll get into a UC no problem because we need the money :)

I visited FLC this summer and I want to go there so bad but I feel like academic wise it isn't the best. From a location perspective it's pretty much the tits.

It used to be COMPLETELY the opposite.  Getting in out of state was much harder when I was going to school.  I have heard they are changing things though, because like you said, they need the money.

I went to UCSB, and skied about 30 days a year, mostly at Mammoth.  It took a lot of driving though.  Davis is great because you are only a couple of hours from Tahoe.  They used to have a ski team there, probably still do.  My buddy was on it when he went there.  It was a good deal, maybe 400$ at the beginning of the year for full access to a house in Tahoe.  We had the same thing in Tahoe, with Mammoth, but the drive was a whole lot further.

I should warn people the California has always made it tough to become a resident, for the purposes of tuition.  One could not just live there for one year and pay in-state.  I doubt those regulations will be relaxed anytime soon.

I would do some research before claiming that out-of-staters are getting into the UC system no problem.  I don't know if the changes have been impelemented yet.  If the average SAT score among residents is higher than the average for out-of-staters, that would indicate that things have changed.

Well...I wouldn't say they get in no problem...but I can guarantee you that it's much easier now for people to get in out of state for money purposes.
I went to UC Davis as an undergrad and I am still here for vet school. When I applied for undergrad EVERYONE applied to UCs (I grew up in Marin, just north of San Francisco) because they are really good schools for a modest price (at the time). I did have really good grades, but i feel like it was much more reasonable for people to get into UCs (maybe not Berkeley or UCLA but the other schools were completely reasonable for people with at least decent grades to get in). Tuition has significantly increased for residents since I was there in undergrad. My brother is now applying to college and I've learned a lot about how it's changed from him-it's much harder now for residents to get into quality UCs unless they have amazing grades or are top athletes. It's unfortunate that Ca residents have a much harder time now getting into Ca public schools.
But skiing-wise=I skied every weekend that there was snow, and even in vet school I still get 40+ days a year. UC Davis is a great school and a fun college town, especially considering it's in the valley. 2 hours is not a bad commute, plus San Francisco is an hour away and Sac is about 20min away.

i'm at my second year here in Reno and i love it, im from south lake so the cost of living so close to home is very small and i couldnt stand to be away from tahoe, N*'s a half hour boreals another 10 min squaw alpine all the places i love are so close its awesome. if you have any questions or want a students honest feedback PM me for sure

biggest thing to consider right hurr.

if you are going to pay for your expensive degree you want to be somewhere you can use it well.

and if you go to CU you are going to want to move to somewhere in the mountains and not stay in boulder. but there are very little jobs in the mountains that will pay enough to satisfy that wonderful degree you get.


im the opposite i want to get away from the city and move to summit/eagle or maybe steamboat and go to cmc, which is a decent college if you are interested in ski resort management/ ski tech.


U of U sounds like your best bet if you want some gnar skiing and be close to school, plus utah has it all park pipe and some sick lines.


plus colorado is flat right?
