'yes, there is a god. but i believe that going to some building, paying money to a church, and reciting prayers that have lost thier meaning is not faith. there is nothing more religious to me than sitting on a boat fishing in the middle of nowhere. or standing on a ski hill on a beautiful day, admiring the view. '
I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I feel like a brainwashed drone in CHurch. I totally agree that there is a God, but we should all find our own, beautiful way to worship him.
That was a good article.

I agree. For me, church is seldom a religious or spiritual experience. There's something about singing a bunch of self-scented songs with crazy people that doesn't push my buttons, sometimes it's great but other times, no. For me the best it gets is Standing alone or with good good friends on a ridge above some fresh virgin pow on a perfect blue-bird day in silence or walking on a beach in sunset, that's what I get the most out of, all good.

Exactly. To me, standing at the top of a huge mountain and looking down upon the world and seeing all the beauty it contains, well, that is deeply religious to me. Standing in a hot building reciting psalms is not. I think, in fact, it breeds contempt for religion.

first off i want to say that i am a christian and believe in every part of it. but i persoanlly can not stand my church that my parents force me to go to. when i go there i feel judged and looked down upon. i also feel that to many people are not sincere and are too fake. my mom forces me to go to church but doesnt realize that alls its doing is pushing me away from religion. i get more of a religious experience by going skiing and seeing what god has created and what god has given to me, the ability to ski, mountains, snow, my health, ect

First of all i'd like to say that I have never been to church (except for one Piano Recital) and I am not very religeous at all... Yet I do believe in a higher being , but going to church every Sunday is like being a teachers pet, for god... or a god's pet if you will.
Being high on a mountain in the pure outdoors is the the way to become clostest to god... or at least thats what i think

I'm Christian, but I choose not to go to church. I'm not seriously religious. My mum's family was when she was growing up, but she wanted to let me make my own choices about things like that. I feel closer to God when I'm out, maybe biking or something, than when I'm stuck inside.

I don't want to be sexually assualted. Thats a good one on why not to go to church, also Mormons are stupid and Salt Lake is gay, another good reason why church sucks, it warps your mind

I get my spirituality from music and nature and art. Church has such a bad reputation and half my family is insane fundamentalist and they frighten me. Church (to me at least) isn't really even trying to help people reach a higher state of spirituality, it's politics. People who follow every part of the religion take it all from the pulpit without even thinking about what that means and how it can be aplied to their life and if there is even and underlying meaning. If Church helps people to feel spiritual, then by all means that is fantastic and good luck. But if people are going to church, taking everything from the pulpit as if it were their own conscience and not even reading the bible or the Qu'ran or whatever book the religion in question is based on then my personal advice to those people or person is: think some, analize some, realize some. Think about what it all really means. Analize what 'the book' is trying to say and realize for yourself what makes sense to you.

Totaly agree with the article as well. Good deeds, being thoughtful and caring is what we should strive for, not to go to church every Sunday.

i still go to church once or maybe twice a month now. sometimes i just look around when people are singing or praying and it feels so wierd. a bunch of people with blank looks on their facves singing and saying these dry, often meaningless lines over and over again every sunday reminds me of psychotic cults that kill themselves when comets pass over. we always think of ourselves as normal, but if you try to look at something from the outside you see how strange our culture and christianity is. personally i agree with you guys who said you get the most out of being out on a mountian or what not. what know whats good for ourselves, we should just write our own bible.

wow. Some of this stuff is really scary. First, being a Christian has nothing directly to do with standing on any mountain, singing any songs, praying any prayers, or doing anything else that was mentioned in this whole thread. It's trusting in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to take our sin upon Him to deliver us from Hell. That's all. trust. faith. Whatever you want to call it, it's simple. 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' Ephesians 2:8. And I also totally agree that standing on top of the world is a very glorifying experience. God reveals Himself through creation and the Bible. And I also agree that sitting in most churches these days is very depressing- the church is supposed to be set aside from the world, as an example, but with news headlines proclaiming how many Catholic priests have molested kids lately, and how 'religion is the cause of every war' (???) it's understandable that nobody wants to go to church any more. I wouldn't go to any of those churches either. the gospel isn't preached, and it's really mindless repetition.
I know this is touchy, but this is my baby, and I'm not going to be a coward. Rise Up!

just re-read that, and I didn't want to give the impression that I was putting people down for saying anything. I think it's awesome that people can say things about God on here and not get chastized. Canada is usually so closed to God. i'm just encouraging you to take a serious look at what's next- when you die. take a second to think about eternity.

whoever said church is just politics (or something like that) i totally disagree. maybe in some danominations and some churches, but almost every sermon ive ever heard has been related to peoples lives and not just politics. one thing that has really restored my faith in the lord is about 3 weeks ago i was busted by the cops wiht my pipe and a little bit of pot. i made a mistake and am now facing the consequences of possibly not going to mt hood for the summer, along with many other things. anyways...3 days after i got caught was sitting in church and the sermon was on how everybody makes mistakes...and we need to overcome them and learn from them. this really helped me in alot of ways. for one i personally belive that god had a part in that sermon. since that sermon i have straightened out a little bit, which is a good thing
