Let's go back in time and take a look at my year.
June 8, 2009: First official day out of school for the summer. I am biking at a local jump park, and hitting a 15 ft step down. I had just built a step up on the other side after the tranny and was guinea pigging it. I took the step down a little too far right, crashed, went into the bars, and couldn't breathe for a while. I knew something was wrong, so I called my mom and she took me to the ER. There, I received the news:
I ruptured my spleen. This was very difficult. I spent a week in the hospital without getting up out of bed even ONCE, then 2 weeks at home doing nothing. After 2 weeks, I could finally drive and go out of the house again, but couldn't do anything athletic. I had to lay low for a total of 2 months, basically the whole summer, but I was finally good to go again.
November 24, 2009: Skiing at PC for a morning session, planning to leave early to catch a flight back to Michigan for Thanksgiving with relatives. I was rocking new skis with sharp edges, and as I did the first switch up for a K-Fed, I caught and dove into the ice. My arm hurt like hell, and I was brought down to the urgent care facility, where they took xrays and told me:
I broke my collarbone. I got hopped up on pills and somehow made the flight to Michigan. A week later, I came home, and got surgery within a week or two. They cut in, reset it, and put in a plate and six screws. They told me it was 6 weeks before I could do anything physical (because it takes that long for primary bone healing) and 12 until I would be 100% again. This is an even bigger setback than before, and it sucks. Finally, my 6 weeks comes up, and I start skiing again.
January 30: It had been about 8 weeks since surgery, my clavicle is feeling great, and I was out shredding at Park City. The last in King's was super smooth, and I decided to do a screamin semen 180. I got it around fine, but the wind had changed a little bit, so I came up a bit short. My knee hurt for a little bit, then it went away, and I skied down. As I skied down, it started hurting again, and I noticed that I didn't have full control over my left ski. I decided to stop for the day, thinking damn, I must have bruised my meniscus. Last Wednesday, I went into my doctor (the same one who did my clavicle surgery) to have my knee looked at. After doing a couple checks, he had his assistant come in to run an important test. She did, and gave me the horrible news.
I had torn my ACL. This is by far the biggest injury I have ever faced, and will take 6 months of recovery after my surgery, which is March 11. I am missing the rest of the ski season, my high school soccer season, and all summer sports, namely biking and club soccer. I don't know what I will find to do, but I do know that I will stay positive through the whole ordeal. I'm not looking for pity, I'm just wondering if anyone else has some similar stories they would like to share, and if I do indeed hold the new record for worst injury season.
