UBC Fraternities

Hey everyone so I go to UVIC and we're starting up a fraternity (go ahead and hate, call me gay or whatever. I've heard it all before), and we're being helped out by Phi Alpha at UBC. I got on the boat for this one a little late so I still don't know anything about the UBC folks.

So anyone who goes to UBC, what are general thoughts towards the fraternities there, and how are the people in them? Are they all douchers or are they legit? How is the stereotype living up out there?

And Frodo if you read this, I value your already stated opinion that frats are gay. Thanks bud.

No one cares about frats at UBC is my impression. I haven't had any interactions with them, positive or negative.

every frat party I've been to has been meh. I personally haven't found them to be the coolest people, but some are ok, not wanting to generalize. I've heard some stories of chicks getting taken advantage of at the frat parties, but you know how rumors go.

I just don't really see the point of having a frat, rather just get a place with cool friends and not get bunched up with stereotypes.

I have only been to a couple frat parties, they were aight, usually a good place to find hot drunk chicks. There are some cool guys in the frats, some douchier than others, but on the whole, most of them are pretty chill from what I have experienced. pretty much what freezed said.

Haha ok thanks everyone. All I really wanted to make sure is that they aren't the typical douchebag stereotype, so this is good news. Our group is a solid group of friends, but we're technically a fraternity.

Yeah it definitely doesn't appeal to everyone and I'm still not even sure if it's gonna be good for me, but I thought I'd give it a go. I'm the cameraman/editor and responsible for edits and that, and I think they'll pay for some better gear too so that's cool.

I'll put in a vote in favour of frats. I never have done as much volunteering as I did when I was part of a frat. We helped run several charity events every year for various beneficiaries and it was quite rewarding. And you get to do it as a group so its fun.(and often paid in beer) Getting a group to go to the library can motivate you to study as well. Might not be as productive but you'll have a greater incentive to go. Both these things you can certainly do on your own, but with a group of friends it becomes easier to do so.

Plus the partying, the place to hang out on campus and networking are a lot of fun. I'm 3 years out of university but a lot of my best friends are people I met through the greek system, and a lot of my job opportunities came from people I met there as well.

There are lots of douches everywhere in life. There will be douches in every fraternity, just like there are people you don't like in all your classes.

I think the only challenges you might have in Vic is 1. No sororities to socialize with. 2. Not having a house
