Time for some new skis

After 1.5 seasons of skiing pretty much strictly rails, my 173 Atomic Punx are finally crapping out. The edge underfoot has taken so much abuse that about 20cm's of it has separated from my base. I took them into the shop today and the tech said he'd do what he could, (cut out some base and epoxy along with something else) but they would probably be toast by the end of this season. I was really happy with this ski but would like to try something different for the next pair.

My Info:

I am:

5'6 (still growing)
120lbs
Ski mostly rails

I need:

A soft symmetrical ski that is good on rails
Size 170-175cm
No preference for width.


And before it is suggested, I'm not getting Line skis. I was on Invaders a couple seasons back and as fun as they were, their durability was just terrible.

you sound exactly like me. my ar6s are like destroyed in half of a season...rockered tails, edge pullouts, the whole works. im thinking about trying some k2 disordorly

I'm not sure if you can find them anymore, but the '09 Urban Punx are made for rails and jibs in general. Very soft, and have decent durability.

I mean the obvious answer is 171 Anthems...but you said no Line skis, so that pretty much leaves....

Nordica Ace of Spades
Volkl Walls
K2 Disorderlys
Moment Reno Jibs
(Those are all the symmetrical skis that I can think of besides Line right now...I think there's gonna be more next season, but it sounds like you want these now)

As far as which will be the softest, I'd say either the Disorderlys or the Ace of Spades will be the softest.

I won't buy line park skis again. Durability is a major issue of mine and Line's just can't handle it. Walls are stiff waaaay too stiff, Disorderly's are also too stiff. I'll check out the Reno Jib's and Ace of Spades.

what about rockers? I'm not sure if you want to stay regular camber or not, but they will feel somewhat buttery with the rocker. Moment has damn tough bases too, IMO

Not big on rockered park skis, I'd prefer regular or zero camber.

Bumping this. It's looking like I'm going to be getting another pair of Punx or a pair of Urban Punx, still open for more suggestions.

For jibbing I'll choose K2 disorderly or Volkl Wall. I have ar6 and their working pretty good on rails but their not symetrical.

i know its not a semmetrical ski but think about the t-hall.  i absolutly love mine and they're holding together nicely.  you can also get them new for pretty cheap.  i bought mine new off ebay for $220 shipped w/out bindings

were the punx nice? ive never really heard anyone talk about them. a good non symmetrical ski is the amplid antidogma. its a super solid ski i would recommend to anyone.

171 on3p blue steeles, have thicker edges then most skis i can think of(2.5x1.7), super light, really poppy, and you can get them rockered

Were you riding the same Invaders as everyone else?

And Coreupts? Good build quality, but a little stiffer
Or Da'Nollies, pretty legit build quality

Or get some more Punx

another sick ski is the icelantic Da Nollies, the moment reno jibs are definately too stiff.

well ive had a pair of kennedys most of this season have skied many rails and done lots of urban on them and there is no sign of damage at all

you sound like an excellent candidate for the salomon 2012. unless you need skis immediately i would try to hold out and get those. i loved them when i demoed them today

The Fortitude Lincolns are symmetrical, not sure on flex though.  Danollies are on the stiffer side, no where near the walls or addicts, but certainly more than invaders.

Thanks for the help, keep the ideas coming.

Just to clarify, this is going to be my everything ski, but I predominantly ski park, and mostly rails at that. I DO NOT want a rockered park ski, or anything stiffer than Punx.

Next years Moment Jib might be what you want.

this years walls have a different flex pattern than the previous twin years, way softer, way more fun, i have the 1st year (green ones) and this years, so much more playful this year

k i know you don't want a rockered park ski but  i would check out the alpha 1's ive heard there durable for rails, and there only rockered in the very tip and tail, underfoot they still have same camber, this will help with butters, switch tricks, and other stuff like that. im giving them a serious look right now and im hoping they'll be what im looking for. Not only that but if theres ever a little bit of pow pow that you wanna ski these will get the job done than any other normal park ski.

If the reason you don't want rockers is that you're concerned they won't be as good on rails and boxes, it's not a problem. I have some Moment rockers and they're great on rails, I find them better than my AR6s, that's probably due to the extra width I guess. The rockers have no camber under foot and then just early rise tip and tail. Camber isn't what helps you lock onto rails. In my opinion, normal camber is worse than flat camber on boxes because it makes it a little easier to catch an edge when spinning. Any of the rockered/early-rise park skis should be good for jibbing if that's what you're after.
