Why ski Patrol sucks

Ski patrol sucks because most of the time they dont give a shit about you or anything your doing they just want to give you shit. They also overreact wayyy to much when it comes to speed and safety. I cut into the trees a while back and came out into an unopened run and was caught by ski patrol . the lady insisted that i had ducked a rope even though i didnt and pulled my pass. i tried to show her where i had went into the trees and she wouldnt listen and that is why ski patrol sucks.

Ski patrol are like Po-Lice. You hate when they do their job and it ruins their fun, but when you need them, youll be glad theyre there!

sure, they will yell at you for going too fast, and clip your tickets for doing stupid stuff...but at the same time they can really save your ass. Wouldnt you rather be in the hands of ski patrol arather than crawling around in pain after you overshot that jump by 30 feet and hurt yourself?

I'm a patroller.  I love seeing what NS'ers do.  The hill has a "no inversions" rule (for good reason in MN - nothing but ice), but that's the only thing I ever have to talk to anyone about, other than if someone decides to be a total shithead in the liftline -- yeah, you're REALLY important to yourself, but everyone else paid to ride the lift too, asshole, so step in line...  Anyway, I digress... 

We are NOT police, and we don't WANT or LIKE to discipline people - trust me.  We're just skiers like everyone else.  I hate having to do my job cuz I hate seeing ANYONE get hurt.  TRUST ME ON THIS.  The last thing I want to do is pull someone off the hill with a day-, season-, or career-ending injury.  But I AM THERE if it dos happen.  Act like a human, have a little courtesy and common sense, and HAVE FUN.  I want you to!  I want to have fun out there, and pulling people in to the aid room in a meat wagon is NOT fun.

Hey man im relly sorry. I guess there is a good reason for it but the lady who pulled me over didnt have to be such an ass about it and could have atleast let me show her where i went into the trees. But anyway really sorry about the group cuz i can get where ur coming from.

No biggie.  Some patrollers do take things a little too "enthusiastically", but they're usually the exception.  Keep in mind that most patrollers tend to be older (heck...I'm 38!!), and a little less tolerant, but most are truly looking out for you.  Who knows...she may have pulled someone out of that same run you were on the day before with very serious injuries.  Or, you may have been the 20th person she had to tell that day, and heard the same story over & over, and just got sick of it.  Luck o' the draw, you know? 

I have only talked to one person this year - an idiot snowboarder who tried to beat the chair, didn't, jumped off to the side, and just about got clobbered by another chair.  The liftie was telling him to act like he'd done this before, and to quit being an idiot (in a nice way), and the kid kept fliipin' shit bak to him.  I finally stepped in, told the kid to "shut up, listen to the liftie, and get on the next chair", at which point he kept on talkin.  Then I basically shut him up by telling him that he was 100% WRONG, and sometimes when you find yourself in a hole, it's best just to stop digging.  I think it confused him a bit, but he did shut up and did what he was told.  I wonder if he figured out what I meant yet?? 

Again, we're there for safety & service.  We aren't cops -- at least not in my eyes, or the eyes of the area I work (volunteer) at.

Patrollers act the way they do because its their job to make sure noone gets hurt. Too many uneducated degenerates out there on the hill getting injuries and then trying to sue resorts for easy cash. Thats why they may seem harsh but just deal with them the same way you deal with police/security guards/bouncers, show some respect and you will get it in return.


Also, Ski Patrol is an awesome movie

i agree with the whole you give them attitude and they will give you more shit thing, but some patrollers are just d bags with too much power and they take full advantage of that power... ive done both, ( give a lot of attitude and just play and along and say sorry) if you give attitude 95% of the time you get more fucked, but if you say sorry, i find that its only gotten better 50% of the time which is pretty damn lame.

excatally right. unless the patrol / liftie is was being a dick first. i was going into the lift line when thier was nobody their and i went through the ski school entrance and the liftie started bitching at me. i didnt hear it but my dad did and he got pissed.

If you eat shit on a mountain its your own fault and if you try to sue a ski resort your just a fuckin dick. And also i get that its the ski patrollers job but i never give them shit and all the ones ive talked to so far excpt for a couple have been assholes for no reason so yeah i get its there job but they dont have to be a dick about it

thread creator, you need to travel a little bit and understand that the strictness of ski patrol and the rules they need to enforce as well as their general attitude varies greatly between different hills.  to make a huge generalization, in my experience it seems that the more gnarly terrain a mountain has, the less controlling patrol is and the more they focus on safety... while more mellow hills are often more strictly patrolled because a) smaller hazards look like a bigger deal and b) the expert and beginner skiers are more likely to share the same terrain and they don't want to scare off the beginners by letting people buzz past them switch all day. my 2 cents.

Ski Patrol are awesome. They help you when you need help, they are a great source for information regarding run openings and weather on pow days, and they know more about their job than the law allows them to. A ski patroller can't legally put your shoulder back in your socket, but many will tell your buddy that if they were you, this is how they would do it. They bomb runs to make them safe, and close them if avalanche danger is higher than you would be able to deal with. Some are asses, but if you are nice to them, they can soften up too. They are your friends, not your enemies.

One day at my local mountain it was snowing really hard and the slopes were really slow but I still really wanted to hit the big park.So in order to hit the first jump we had to start from a trail above the park in order to hit the first jump, which involved cutting through trees ofcourse. Coming up on my 3rd run at the jump I find 2 ski patrolers fencing off inrun making it impossible to hit the jump. No matter how much I tryed to reason with them they still closed off the in run ruining the rest of my day. As well as a "warning"...

Thanks...  Wish I worked in a an area of the world where I did more of the cool things you mentioned above.  But yeah, 99% of the time, we're there to help, not hinder.  Some of us are even kinda alright dudes...we might not ride the rails & boxes with you, but we rip all the same.  I patrol because I love skiing, and I think I can offer something to a situation should the shit hit the fan.  You gotta like helping people too - which I do.

At Massif 2 weekends ago me and my buddy were on the chair with this patroller, and i just started asking him about how the conditions were in the last week or so, and stashes we could find, etc. Then we just started talking about where we were from etc. Even though there was a slight language barrier (massif is super french) he was really cool. It ended up paying off in the end because later that day the same patroller saw my buddy just chiling at the top of the park swigging out ofa beer bottle and all he did was tell him he wasnt allowed to drink on the hill, so he let him put it in a snowbank to come back for later.

Also most of the time kids think they arent giving attitude when they really are, just look at alot of the skater vs. security guard videos, same story. Kid thinks he isnt doing anything but hes really just being a wise-ass.

you cant lump all ski patrol together...some are dope and not complete dicks and some arent. i have had to pull my pass out about 15 times this year to prove it was me to ski patrol and lifties. stoppin me midrun and asking me to take off my helmet and my goggles so they can see my eyes so they can make sure im not using someone elses pass. i havent seen this happen to anyone else at my mt. or to my friends who i ski with, and im not even a park skier. im gonna go against the grain here and say fuck ski patrol, or at least the power trip douches. 20 years of skiin and i have never needed them once, hell, most of them cant ski for shit anyways (at least at my mt.). unless both of my legs are broken or im in a coma i will never need them, and until that day i will continue to hate them for singling me out damn near everyday. and to anyone who wants to be a smart ass, i have skied down a full run with a broken leg so dont say i dont know what im talkin about

Although taking your pass may have been harsh, entering or exiting a closed trail from trees is not an excuse to ski a closed trail.

almost had my pass taken this weekend because i cut down from one trail to another that was right below it. there were no ropes or trees anything that made it seem like you werent allowed to do that. they tried telling me that i should have had the common sense to know that i could have SPOOKED a beginner and made them fall and hurt themself. i mean seriously. I know their job is to help, but sometimes it is complete BS.

idk why everyone is hating one wafflesteeze because the circumstance of his pass getting taking away is a huge d-bag move by the Ski Patrol. I completely agree with the reasons of it but his argument was that he went through a woods path and ended up there. The ski patrol shoulve recognized this and just have given him a warning. I dont agree that ski patrol sucks tho, just some are much more strict than others
