Sewing and making my own outerwear.

I want to make my own outerwear but need some questions asked first.

What type of fabric would i use?
whould i need to use a special type of thread?
what whould i do to sealing the seems?
any other suggestions /tips would help

nylon is the basics. i dont know specifics about nylon, all i remember is that nylon can run you $15/yard. and dont expect to find the fabrics at your local joanns or fabric store. consider online retailers.

seam sealing is generally done with tape. it always has seemed like electrical tape that has been treated and heated, but i can guarantee you that it is something more.

thread could be either regular thread or more filament like thread.

question regarding your venture. do you have a sewing machine that can handle this task. most consumer sewing machines found at michaels, joanns, ac moore cant handle this, even if a retailer says so. in general you would need a industrial sewing machine - one that sews boat tops/covers, or actually from a textile shop.

i just checked my grandmothers industrial machine and its a Consew. this thing was originally from a factory when she was in the textile industry making clothes for a retailer. this thing is a tank and a beast. it has lasted the wear and tear of major clothing production, and it has lasted all through the years that she has made my clothes. i would say that this thing has been running since the 80s. my friends dad who is in the marine reupholstery industry uses this same machine for sewing canvas. this machine is a single needle drive. however it appears most new outwear uses double or zig zag stitching so you might need to shell out more money for a different stitch. and as i said in the last post, you really got to think about the sewing machine before the fabric, because a basic $100 machine won't be able to successfully stitch thicker, stiffer materials. speed is another factor. overall the learning curve to use the machine seems simple. my younger brother and sister were taught by my mom to make stuffed animal snakes in less than a day.
