What's the deal with taking pictures at the Olympics?

I'll be going to the olympics for first three days and I'm really looking forward to taking some pictures at the different events(opening ceremony, alpine ski racing, and luge) with my d90. I have read some things that say that they don't allow any dslrs or any camera with interchangeable lenses at the events unless you have a press pass. However the official olympics website says,

"Photography for personal use is permitted, but flash photography is not permitted at Canada Hockey Place, Pacific Coliseum, Richmond Olympic Oval, UBC Thunderbird Arena and The Whistler Sliding Centre. The use of broadcast or photographic equipment for commercial purposes is prohibited."

Doesn't say anything about DSLRs for personal use. Does anyone know for sure what the rule is?

If you're not taking the photos to sell or distribute outside the games you should be fine.

This sounds like trying to get into an event with some tiny point and shoot vs a slr. Even if somebody sees both cameras, they'll ask the person with the slr to put it away while the person with the p&s uselessly fires their flash at athletes over 100 feet away. Recently though, since more people are buying slrs this "rule" seems more lax and you probably won't be hassled. If they do, bring up what you've read on the site, maybe bring a copy of the page with you?

Like you never used to see slrs or point and shoots at football games but now everybody has them.

good idea about printing out that web page.

It seems like they would make it more clear if the use of DSLRs was not allowed for personal use. as said before print the page out that says personnel use.
