FS: 1996 Subaru Outback

1996 Subaru Outback White Automatic with 136,xxx miles. Engine has a blown headgasket but runs. Has over $2500 into it in the past 2 years alone. Body is in good condition with rust being the only thing out of place, mainly on the drivers side. Heated seats, block heater, tinted windows, new brakes and lines all around, new fuel tank and filler tube, alternator and more.

I originally bought the car to fix it up but have since changed my mind. Pictures are from when I was cleaning the headlights which is why they are removed. The car DOES come with headlights. I'm asking $1000 which is less than 1/3 of KBB and I've talked to numerous mechanics about the headgasket replacement and they are less than $500 using Subaru OEM parts or cheaper using non OEM.

1500 is a good deal for a Subaru wagon(1000+500 repair) AWD is perfect for gettin to mtns. good luck sellin. might wanna take some pics of rust and maybe any other dents/scratches & twat not. maybe even some interior shots(one of the dash with the mileage visible)

I do to... Main reason why I'm selling it. As for mileage, I've bought and sold countless things on here, ebay and other sites. Probably close to $25,000 worth. I wouldn't screw someone over. Plus I have tons of people on here who can vouch for me.

no offense, but its a HUGE deal. I would NEVER buy an automatic car ever, and when buying my outback I made sure it was a manual....I came across so many automatic outbacks that were a great deal but had to pass them up because they wernt 5spd.

so I dont wanna bag on your thread cus its a great deal and a great car, but if you want a manual and you know how much better driving a stick is, then it makes sense to not buy and auto.

you're buying the car for $1000.
gasket kit would only cost you $200.
trans from a yard should only cost you $750 TOPS.

and if you do all the work yourself, that gives you an insanely reliable vehicle for under two grand.
that's what i would do if i had the pleasure of buying this beauty.

how many NSers could install a tranny? haha I hear you, its a good deal if you want to fix her up, but not many people would want to spend the time and effort with buying a tranny and installing it. I got my already manual outback that runs perfectly and has 160k w/ all maintenance records for $2,300

but if you have the space and mechanical know how, it would be a great purchase.

and sounds like you got a fucking killer deal sir. i'm looking for something like that in the WA/OR/ID area.

Yeah, if you knew how it would be a perfect fix-it-uper...

I got mine back home in CA, and yes it was a killer deal...but they were also somewhat of a familys friends friend haha so that factored into the deal.

Check craigslist religiously and you will find something, if you made the journey to Boise I see great deals on outbacks here all the time.

(sorry to get thread off topic, someone should fucking buy snowcases outback!)

It's at a warehouse with most of the tools and lifts so if someone wanted to, they could work there.

someone should jump on this. I bought a 95 legacy wagon awhile ago and she's at 192 thousand miles and runs like a champ. great car for driving up to the mountain.

a head gasket job at a dealer is 1500, at local shops around 1200, the DOHC engine in it makes it expensive. I've pulled my engine and rebuilt it myself and it took about 12 hours give or take lunch n beers. + the downtime of getting the heads milled.

You don't have to pull the engine. It can be done in an afternoon's time. The OEM gasket kit is about $150 at the most. Heads shouldn't have to be milled unless it was driven with the gasket blow, which it wasn't. It overheated once and was towed to where it sits now.

Either way, I have a shop that will do it much cheaper than $1200.

KBB for this car is almost $3,000 for fair. Even if you spent $1500 on a headgasket, you would still get it for less than what it's worth.

Fair
$2,885

* Some mechanical or cosmetic defects and needs servicing but is still in reasonable running condition.
* Clean title history, the paint, body and/or interior need work performed by a professional.
* Tires may need to be replaced.
* There may be some repairable rust damage.

I've done headgaskets and lots of work to subaru's. keep in mind I have swapped my 99 legacy wagon, and yes unfort on the DOHC 2.5 you have to yank her. the 2.5 SOHC and 2.2 you don't have to much still makes it much easier if you have a shop that does it for much less than do it and keep her!. the kit + water pump should be changed with it.

I believe this is the dohc and I was told by numerous mechanics it would not need to be pulled. I have a 98 as my daily driver so I don't need this car.

On the maintenance reports it says 2.2l sohc but on the vin check it is 2.5l dohc. The VIN is 4s3bg6852t7385452.
