Recent Toyota recalls

Anyone following the latest recalls? I'm watching ABC and now some guy apparently came forward (some Toyota lawyer) and said that Japanese Toyota head honchos have tried to cover up all the defects (accelerator issue/Prius braking).

Background info for those that havent followed along: Toyota recalled half their cars from American dealerships and stopped their sales, saying that they were working on a pedal fix (which still isnt the issue). Now theyre recalling the Prius because of alleged brake failure problems.

Thoughts?

I've just been reading whatever's been in the papers but I found one thing funny:

Apparently some cars these days have pedals that aren't attached to any part of the engine. i.e. when you push the pedal down, you aren't doing anything but telling a computer that you are pushing on the pedal "this hard" and the computer should tell another part of the computer to make the engine work "this hard" to go "this fast"

Hopefully that makes sense. But really it just means that if your electronics system goes haywire, you can't just let off the gas, it won't know any better and you could just keep accelerating. And I think that's one of the problems Toyota has been dealing with. Not all the cars' problems are in the break pedals but actually in the electronics system.

There is a Toyota plant 45 minutes from my permanent residence. They assemble everything there, test the products and ship them out. Also most of the parts contracted out to suppliers are made in America. Part of Toyota's "heartland strategy"

The problem with the pedal turned out to be electronic. Thats what they get, should have stuck with cables.

Hondas are better anyway.

my initial point was to buy domestic.
everyone jumped up my ass saying toyota is made in america.
i came back saying toyota is not a american company.

my point is, that toyota's may be assembled in america, but toyota is in no shape way or form a american company.

meaning that it is a import car.
meaning that it is not a domestic car.

There's no better fail safe than a cable throttle. There's just more stuff that can go wrong with everything being driven by a computer. Our governments jets have manual systems on their aircraft just incase the flybywire fails.

And with the global economy we're in right now, there's not many legitimate reasons to "buy domestic" as you laid out so dogmatically.

it sounds to me like its random though too. its not every one of a car, just some.

every company has flaws occasionally.

but i agree. i drive a 93 camry thats had nothing but standard maintenance, and a repair when i hit something, aka my fault.

yea all my cars are 04's or prior so no recall on any of them, but same deal, nothing but standard stuff, windshield replacement or two after getting rocks flung at them (nothing they can do) and maybe some fan belts, but those go after a while. I'm so sad i have to sell my four runner :'(

There is a list of toyotas that were recalled, and all of them are newer as in post 2000. I know the older ones are reliable, but toyota has gone the way of GM with how their conducting things now.

Agreed. Those vehicles along with the legendary 22-RE are what made Toyota's reputation for reliability. Although I still like the newer models, it seems that reliability just isn't what it used to be. In fact, the tailgate on my dad's 08 Tacoma is bent from loading a 200 pound dirtbike into the back. Small stuff like that should not happen, especially when I know my friend's 92 Toy pickup has had bikes loaded in it for years and is fine

subaru - because of my contempt for ns kids always saying subaru when the person is asking about what's a good truck. and they are for people who hate cars but are too spineless to take it to the next level and not drive one.
chrysler- for as long as its owned by cerberus
any gm car that is still apart of gm-  forever and ever.
toyota - because all their cars built after 1997 suck and are boring.

toyota's are very good quality and very efficient cars. to say that the exec's of the company are 'hiding' a scandal, is just american news networks making shit up to entertain and get more viewers because of their more entertaining stories.

there are recals on all different kinds of cars every year, some bigger than others.

and to the comment that was made about your pedal controlling a computer, this is true. almost every new car has a computer sensor in place of mechanical switches and cables. just like when you roll down your window, there is no 'switch' in there anymore, now its a computer sensor that tells the window motor to roll down the window.

Well, I'd still buy a Toyota over a GM or Chrysler because any vehicles made under those brands are just money pits and I'm not happy they borrowed millions of government money and then said they probably couldn't pay us back. And since Toyota is made in an American facility, a Toyota is actually more beneficial to America than a GM or Chrysler vehicle. I am actually really starting to like Ford vehicles. They look good, get great mileage, and they are really stepping it up in all areas, especially quality.

I'm sorry but this whole gas pedal problem has been going on for the past couple years now, and Toyota has simply stated the was either the drivers fault or floormats. Neither of which are true, a stuck gas pedal doesn't keep on accelerating, it keeps it at the same position it was stuck in so it has to be a software glitch. I don't see why they can't just admit fault and fix it. But still sweeping the problem under the rug when several people have died from it isn't making things any better for them.


Btw sorry if that's chopped a little bit, I suck at typing on an itouch.

hyundai quadrupled its sales since last year, i think hyundai, along with ford, are going to continue to grow and i think these mistakes by toyota might cause them to loose the top spot.

just wait till you see hyundai's superbowl commercials for this year, they are comming out swinging

Never heard of this and that's Japan's government, not America's. What I'm saying is that your tax dollars and my parent's (since I don't pay taxes) taxes are going towards a terrible company that makes terrible vehicles. If GM made better vehicle and actually ran a decent company, I would be down for helping them out of the shitter, but they have made no effort to change. With Toyota, you are buying a vehicle that does not use your government's tax dollars and it's of a much higher quality. Sorry if that's confusing and choppy.
