I need some ideas for a woodshop project

Does anyone have ideas for a nice woodshop project. I am a senior in highschool and we have to work on one single project the whole semester, or a series of smaller ones. I really dont know what to make. in the past, i have made a ski rack, a modern end table, fold out style patio table and an intarsia. Does anyone have any ideas? And no, i dont think skis would work.

I am serious. My grandfather is what people consider a 'master woodworker' and he used to make these all the time(ranging from 6 inches to 6 feet) and they sold for BANK.

And they just look badass.

what kind of tools you got available? lathe or anything? or just hand tools.
if you have a way to bend and shape wood you could make a boat.

This is a master reply to almost every post lol.  Yeah we have basically everything but presses.  I havent really used a lathe before so that much be cool to do something on that.  Wooden ski poles would probably snap, unless they were made out of like bamboo.  A boat would most likely take way more than a semester to make.   You need a press and some moulds to make a longboard.  Haha i could make a 4 foot tall afterbanging nutcracker.   But actually, a foosball table doesnt sound too bad. hmmmmmmmm.   I was thinking maybe a coffee table?

A box inside a bigger box.  Then build in little supports like 3 inches up from the bottom on the first box so the second box can sit on them.  Then you have a dope ass spot to hide your smoking utensils. (foolproof)

no!!!!

i am making a ski press right now.. it has taken almost a whole year to get every thing ready and set too press skis.. but if you have a bunch of money and lots and lots of time go for it...

or make wodden dildos

or paddles for the freshmen.. i made one this year out of solid oak, with forty holes drilled in it and a nice grip to break some asses... the only problem is that it is considered a weapon it is so gnarly

I second the idea of a bad ass adirondack chair or two. I had many wood shops in high school. Some of the cooler projects I have seen were:

Cedar lined chest

Large adirondack chair with hand carved detail

Full size oak entertainment center.

Wooden tobaggin

Bottom line is don't dick around and make something small. Commit yourself and make a nice large project, not for the damn grade either. Do you have any idea how much nice wood furniture costs in a store???? Most highschools still use nice hardwoods at steal of a deal prices per board square foot. My buddy made a large oak entertainment center for around 150 dollars, to buy a solid oak entertainment center is probably over a grand.

It is a great opportunity, use it well. Wood shop was some of the best times of my high school experience.

skate board or a mountain board (like a big offroad skate board) or a long board.

thats what i made when i was 16 and got an A* for it

make a press with a female/male part to it in the shape of the deck you want, use flexiply to cover the top, use 2mm thick ply wood and laminate it all up using really strong wood glue works a treat

theres loads of websites and stuff to help on making mountain boards/longboards/skate boards it is well easy to do and looks pretty sick and if you use the right materials it will work great!

make a box. the school will usually pay for materials which means you can get puck board for the top and make it about 15ft long. i made one and it took about half a semester so you could do it for sure.

or if they will let you incorporate skis. the obvious answer would be a chair, or bench made of skis.


ive got a ski bench that my brother and i made with my grandpa, its a pretty cool conversation piece. (made out of 210cm skis from probably the mid 90s)

Pretty sure wood shop doesn't involve screwing 2x4s together. It's more along the lines of actually shaping and finishing real wood.

+ k for the good ideas so far. and for the stupid ones.. well thanks for the bump. i have actually thought about the foosball table. its def do-able but i dont know where i would put it in my house. The adirondack chairs are too easy for this project. it pretty much has to take up the whole semester. so thats like 90 hours.
