Sick Photography You Should Check Out

The kid's name is Dan Lee. He's an amazing photographer and I think you guys would really appreciate/enjoy his style. I've known him since 5th grade so it's been sick to see his skills progress. He's got a shitload of talent and never ceases to amaze the shit out of me with his work. A few of his biking photos have been published in some magazines. Check out his site, it's pretty sick. He's got some crazy stuff up there from urban missions to biking and climbing and cliff jumping.

I only looked at his bike and ski shots, I don't think this guy has heard of rule of thirds because everything was dead center. You guys are hyping this waaaay to much, there was only 1 photo from the ski shots that I actually liked.

Agreed. He is good but I don't think his work is anything to drool over. Im not trying to hate, but I think some of his shots are either cliché or could have been done better.

The rule of thirds is not a magical formula for good photographs, it's just a rule of thumb that works well for some things. There are thousands of great photos out there with the subject centered in the frame--you cannot possibly judge aesthetics with absolute ideals. Just for an example off the top of my head...check out some of the photos from Richard Avedon's American West series.

I completely agree. It really pisses me off when people have such a raging hard on for the rule of thirds and they don't understand that it's just a GUIDELINE. It's so fucking annoying when I'm lookin' through all the critique threads and everyone is like RULE OF THIRDS RULE OF THIRDS RULE OF THIRDS. Using the rule of thirds in every fucking photo would be RETARDED.

Now back to the point of the thread: he's got some banger photos in there. Some crazy good strobe work. I really like the super wide angle cliff jump one. What camera does he use?

as posted before, 1/3 dont need to be used to make an effective photo. most action shots are cropped to focus on the action, but some action shots like ski aerials need some frame of reference, which means that rule of thirds might need to be applied. in a landscape panorama, there is usually no rule of thirds applied, but when photographing animals in a landscape rule of thirds should be applied, or if you are trying to have a focal point of say the washington monument you would want to put the monument in relation with a background or foreground.

regarding the thread, i would have to say that the kids work is nice, but not the best. lighting is pretty much spot on, along with lead in lines in such, but as mentioned some shots should use some rule of thirds. and other shots just need better composition totally (the skier/snowboarder skiing in a bridge setting) - if he zoomed it a bit more, it would have helped.
