OK well i'm A canadian infantry solider stilll in basic, but I've met lots of guys who are pilots and i'll try too answer the best i can, JOin you go to the recruiter.
Air force would most likily help you the best on that course.
well here when you join Infantry (Example) You are require to serve at lest 3 years, because well your traning is put to use for a bit, and its expensive. So i'm guessing you'd need a to serve enou8gh years too pay back the License.
Here you need to have 20/20 uncoreected vision to become a Pilot of anysort, so I"m guessing it's the same/similar there.
1. You have to have a Bachelor's or higher degree.
2. You must go to officer candidates school (depending on branch) and pass.
3. You have to be selected to go to flight school to become a helo pilot. There is never a guarantee that you get the job you want. You could end up flying a cargo plane.
4. For aviation contracts, it's usually a minimum of six years of service, AFTER you have completed your training, but I believe for pilots it's usually around 8 years.
Ok soo I'm not the best at answering for american military stuff because it's well quite different then CF so, i googled this answer and someone asked this on yahoo ask or whatever it is, and well here is a (solid, I think) answer
Unless you have a massive bank account, basically the only way to get a job as a helicopter pilot is through the military and you have to be an officer, either warrant or commissioned. While civilian chopper flight schools do exist, they are generally (minimum) 2-4x more expensive than earning a fixed-wing certificate.
And thats just getting the license. No civilian company is going to hire you without you having significant hours behind the collective of a chopper which will cost you more money either earning your commerical and instructor certificates so that MAYBE you can get paid for your flight time.
As far as the Army route goes you have to:
1) earn your commission either through OCS or ROTC and perform well enough with a high GPA 3.3+ and good physical fitness (as well as get lucky enough) to get branched aviation pass your flight physical and report for training.
2) enlist with a warrant officer stipulation in your contract, pass a flight physical, finish Warrant Officer Career College, and attend flight school here at Ft. Rucker, AL for the next 18-24 months.
The routes for the other branches of service are similar. Its hard, but doable. Good luck
I hope this helps. (even tho the OP said he didn't care too much for it anymore, I was interested to learn more about the system)
THIS IS GOING TO BE BOLD, AND IN CAPS BECAUSE SOME IDIOT IS GOING TO READ THE POST OF MINE ABOVE AND BE LIKE "YOU'RE NOT IN THE AIRFORCE, DUHH" I DIDN'T WRITE THAT POST, IT'S FROM YAHHOO ANSWERS OR W.E. just sayin, before someoneelse does.
