2010 olympics

do any Canadians here think that the Olympics should not be in Canada? I sure as fuck don't, firstly you have to be filthy rich to actually see the games so if your an average Canadian there is pretty much no chance of you seeing them... also, the games are costing around 6 billion dollars, if you have ever spent time in Vancouver spending insane rent or living in a fucking ghetto im sure you would agree that there is better ways to spend that money. Also, the host cities always loses money and the committee is run by a bunch of elitist douchebags... the list goes on and on, what a waste...

i get to go and im really excited, but yeah i dont know what to think because from what i hear its going to be a total gongshow and has basically destroyed that whole area.

the olympics have a brutal tendency of ruining cities. A city is selected, the people are happy etc etc, but then over time it becomes a burden.

They spend a lot of money on facilities that will probably be used be once, then sit around and maybe hold some event once every few years.

I went to the 2000 games in Sydey, and although it was an amazing experience and provided heaps of publicity of all kinds for the country and city and was largely successful, the problem wth these types of events are that the facilities become massive white elephants, hardly or if ever used again 10 years on.

It would be interesting to hear the experiences of those in SLC and the opinions of Vancouver ppl about this.

think real deep and hard.... maybe.... I.... live... in Quebec now, but am actually from another part of Canada...?!

Anyways, i have family in vancouver and its widely known that it is stupidly expensive to live there, and assuming your twelve and don;t have to pay the bills and cannot yet drink i;ll also assume youve never been to east hastings, because yes i am calling that area poor.

wow your an idiot, what I am saying is that it is a very expensive city to live in, which has nice areas, but also has very bad areas, and that instead of spending 6 billion dollars on the olympics perhaps the money could have been used to A) help alleviate the the very high cost of living (average person in Vancouver spends almost 75% of their income on housing... probably a little over your head), and also B) do something to improve the situation in the worst area in Canada (east hastings) vs. catering to the world's elite who really will do nothing for the city in the long run.

They should split up the Olympics. Have different events in different places, just have them all occur at the same time. The economic burden would be spread out, and wouldn't harm one economy seriously.

Just a thought.

not sure if its 100% true but when i was living in SLC i remeber someone telling me they gathered all the homeless people in salt lake gave them all like 100 bucks and sent them on buses to Vegas during the olympics. lol.

There is a reason why the housing market in Vancouver is so high: the demand to live here increases year after year and people are willing to pay a premium to live in Vancouver. If this trend continues, I doubt you will see any major decreases in real estate prices.
After all, why would you ever think of moving anywhere else in Canada?

...you don't have to be filthy rich to go to the olympics it's not like tickets are overpriced (unless you buy them off someone else, obviously) and like someone said before Vancouver is super expensive because everyone wants to live there because it's an amazing city.

The only time it would make sense for a city to host the olympics is if they already have most all the facilities they need. It more than the event centers themselves the cities need to add transportation capabilities, housing, and food.

Also I think the last time a place made money of the olympics was in LA I think and that was because they didnt have to spend a bunch of money on brand new facilities that were never going to be used again

I definitely think the pricing is rediculous, but the Olympics are a special honour that not all countries can claim too. I feel that spending this money is fine seeing as it is a very special event. Secondly, the building for the olympics will only benefit the city of Vancouver etc. Overall, I'm pretty stoked to have the world visit my country and see how beautiful and amazing Canada is.

If you actually looked into it and applied for hockey tickets, they were only $80 - 150
The fact that people are selling their tickets for $5000 and actually getting it is a different story
wouldn't you want to make $4800 per ticket? especially if there is a likely buyer
seems pretty reasonable to me

meh for the olympics.

But because of it, for opening day celebrations I am hosting a railjam in downtown Victoria (Capital of BC) on Saturday, so I'm stoked on that. When else would I be able to get the city to truck in a whack of snow and then for us to be able to session some boxes and rails.

im poor and in univeristy and I found decent priced tickets its really not that bad. People bitch and bitch in this city. But its not going to be that bad, have fun and soak it in. Most people would be stoked to have a global celebration vancouver is just stuck up. As stated Sydney and Salt Lake really profited from the games, its really just a big investment. I was in Whistler on Sunday, the place is dead, ya Cypress has no snow, but it will work out, hell if Jonny Molsley can have a big air in September in San Fran freestyle skiing and boarding can work with 50cms of snow.

Ya its a pain in the ass having to go though security for class, having the bus routes changed and always full but its one month in your life, make the best out of it.Haters hate.

they may be spending 6 billion dollars or whatever you use in canada the loon or something, anyway, people try to have the olympics in there country because of all the tourists/money it brings in, and it boosts the economy. canada will make the money back, or else they wouldnt have wanted it there in the first place. its benefiting your country, dont worry
