Premier Pro FF media decoder help

I am a newb at this stuff so hang with me.

I took a bunch of videos with my point and shoot digital camera and just wanted to string them together and put it online so the people in it can see themselves and improve.

When I import the clips, in .avi format, it opens a new case of FF media decoder on the task bar, if I get them all open it freaks out and runs shitty and eventually crashes.

Do I have to reformat the videos before I bring them in or is there a quick fix.

I use Premiere Elements 8 but ive had the same problem. I fixed it by going to the Project Presets menu in the New Project prompt box and selecting the format of the video i was importing. (in your case .avi)
