It does, the newer firmware puts it up to 4.5k.
There is some truth to what eheath said above but there are also some faults. 35mm is not necessarily better than what the RED can produce, a 1k scan on film is what used to be standard for converting film to video, then they've uped it over the years and 2k would be "HD" or a little over. But to put a set resolution to film doesnt really work, cause in all honestly we could probably put a 15k scan on a 35mm film and we wont get any better resolution, all we will get is better clarity on the film itself, which would at that size scan be a lot of grain. So its kinda hard to judge what the actual resolution is of 35mm, but I know that the RED is supposed to be on or above par with it.
And not all movies are shot on film these days, I know there have been a lot lately that have been shot on RED or other digital cameras. We seem to be entering a age where film is becoming obsolete. Not there yet but soon.
