Replying to New Camera

Currently I'm shooting with a Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd which admittedly isn't that good. However I'm back on the prowl for a new camera and I want to step it up to something that is relatively easy to learn, good quality but not too expensive. Being able to perform time lapses would be a bonus. A cannon / Nikon look to be great brands to buy, but I'm unsure as to what model and lens as a starter. I will be shooting a number of things consisting from sports i.e skiing to landscapes to macros. Thanks.
