Im watching snowboarder big air. They cant land a dub 10! TJ landed a 16!
I think its sick because everyone is getting real stoked on our sport. Even the ESPN announcer just said that the skiers tricks defiantly outweigh the snowboarders where the leader has a 70.

Yeah, Keir Dillon said that the tricks being thrown by the boarders didn't stack up to the ones the skiers were throwing.

why the fuck was the announcer that is a snowboarder trying to explain why jumping on skis is easier than snowboards? he had no idea what he was talking about. i would agree that landing on skis is easier than boarding, but he made himself look like an idiot trying to explain it. did anyone else catch that?

he had a valid point. we have a higher surface area available to land on.
obviously two skis together aren't wider than a snowboard. but we can spread our legs to gain stability, while snowboarders are stuck washing out on a bad landing

yeah. you want to know what else is really easy? boarding switch. i used to board here an there, and i wold go switch and reg all the time. and i'm about as far as it gets from ambedextrious. at least there back isn't facing down too...jeez

It is a valid point to an extent. From a physics perspective when you start with your weight spread out, legs wide, and then bring them together in mid-air you will spin faster. Conversely, spreading your legs back out will slow down the rotation making it easier to land. Skiers can do this where as snowboarder cannot. Having extra edges is also an advantage when trying to stop the spin as well. Still the snowboard big air has been weak.

wow, i wish my first post was that kick ass. your very right. skiing and boarding have always been very close in terms of level of competition, but skiing just pulled way ahead last night, thanks to the work of Jossi Wells, TJ Shiller and Elias Ahmbul

?? Only thing I saw was a one sided competition with sean white blowing everyone out of the water....prettying boring to me, everyone knew he was gonna win. At least in skiing theres a few guys that can take the podium each year....

and I agree with the OP..I almost feel asleep watching snowboard big air...so patheric washing out on dub 10's....skiers were going huge stomping deep landings all night....

Same is true of the women's snowboard pipe going on right now.

I have yet to see a pipe run with the kind of doubles that Shaun, Podlatchikov, Vito and that japanese dude were putting down, not to mention Lago, Pearce and Danny Davis not in the comp. I don't know what it is if it's easier to throw sick doublecorks on a board in the pipe but they appear to be a solid year ahead of the skiers in that department. Of course, Skiers have a chance to prove me wrong tomorrow.

to an extent. as skiers, we can come into the jump with a wide stance and close our feet together to spin faster. i would say that a double is probably easier on skis because of that. which is why we have double 14s and now 16s.

landing is easier on skis because you face forward instead of to the side.

either way, skiers definitely stepped up the game last night huge

maybe it's just me, but i have a bit of a problem with a perfect score on switch fs dub 10. the other dude did switch bs dub 12, and had he landed it it probably would have been a perfect score as well.
just doesn't add up

they gave 100, apparently so. snowboarding is farther away from skiing in pipe than this is from our big air.

some snowboarder just got a perfect score in big air with a double cork 10 or 12. couldnt tell. he only grabbed in between his legs too. so lame.

Yeah the problem is the judges blew their loads giving Horgmo a 47 on a doublecork 10 and they just had no more room to move when people started throwing better stuff. Bad judging. It's all relative.

im not liking the 50's that the judges are giving, for both skiing and boarding. there is always room for improvement, and the riders that are getting a second 50 are showing that their first trick wasn't perfect and could be improved.

and theres no way to do a 16 on a snowboard. the wide stance and lack of length to land on make that impossible. or if it was, itd be hideous. i was impressed tonight thought they threw down.

People are right, physics wise...spinning and landing on skis is way easier. Think of it this way, sit in an office chair and start spinning. keep your knees and ankles close together and feel how fast you spin. Then spread your feet about 2ft apart and feel what happens.

And a also agree with being able to open up and slow your rotation down. You can do it with skis, not with snowboards. And with landing, skiers can widen their stance for the landing.

And lastly, skiers DO have 2 edges they can dig in when they land to stop their rotation, boarders only have one. How many times lats night, on MEGA MO did you skier land, and one of skis kinda washed out, or came off the ground, but he rode it out one one ski. On a board, you're going to fall if you loose and edge.


OK, yes I'm a boarder. But don't take this as hating on skiing. I watched the big air last night, and was STOKED. I thought it was fucking awesome. And their is no arguing that skiers went bigger. But...that doesn't give people a reason to hate on snowboarding. Just be stoked that you get to watch a bunch of people absolutely throwing down, and don't hate just because they're different.

everybody should do whatever he likes if its skiing or snowboarding! both is extremely hard to do on that level we just saw today and yesterday! so shuddup and stop hating on people! seriously im tired of that! just be stoked for 'dem guys and enjoy watching! there is really no need to hate!!
who cares if boarders or skiers can spin more? and yes i know, it is all about being good (winning) and pushin to the limit for some! and thats fine, right? guys, just have a good time here and enjoy the action! numbers (12,14,16°) are irrelevant, its not just a score and a spin! Skiing or Snowboarding is more than that!

the announcers are pretty stupid though.
they said that landing stuff is easier for skiers because we have 4 edges
and snowboarders have only 2...which makes no sense because you can't use all 4 edges at once

Re Reading what I originally said this probably sounded hate filled, but I had not intentions of that. I just was trying to point out how much skiing has progressed trick wise and in popularity. Who knows if the popularity is good or bad but its sick to see people getting stoked on park skiing when most of america thinks of skiing as racing down an icey hill.

Oh you snowboarders quite being little bitches. I ski and snowboard a lot. I am one of a handful around my home hill that actually rides legit ski park. However, there has been a growing amount of skiiers coming out these days.  But for the last 4 years of my life I get nothing but shit from snowboarders about how much cooler snowboarding is and skis are gay and all this shit. i don't  really care I'm used to it. But... Once skiing starts doing something better you boarders are all "oh you have this and we can't because of this and blah blah blah..." Man up you pussies. For once skiiers get to rag on you and now your crying.  Two plank Wanker til the end!!!

The x games is a great event for both skiing and snowboarding even though the announcers always suck. I was impressed with the big air finals for snowboarding, a bit step up from the earlier rounds.

I find it interesting to think about the tricks from a physics perspective. It helps me visualize how to actually do them when I'm not at the mountain. In this case I think it also partially explains why the snowboarders kept nearly going off the landing. They were carving more aggressively up the lip to try speed up there spin.

I just joined to throw in my two cents, don't know how karma works.
