A little unnerving. The planet is due for that thing to blow off again any time now based off the timing of prior super eruptions of the caldera.

If/when Yellowstone goes, it will quite possibly end human existence.

Frightening to think about. Hopefully it's not time yet.

unless you guys have seen the movie 2012, SHUT THE FUCK UP, because you have no idea that it's actually going to happen! I watched the movie at least 14-15 times and i now know how to survive the chaos! you have to drive a limousine, steal and airplane, steal an RV. steal another airplane, and sneak your way aboard a chinese cruise ship. good luck to you ignorant fools, you probably don't even know how to get the map to the japanese boat.

we spent a week talking about this in my geology class and i'm not trying to be rude, but you're not really that close to the truth. sort of, but not really. the heavy ash and large particulates will settle over almost the entire western US (like you said), but the far more concerning effect will be the fine particles that stay suspended in the atmosphere. this works like an opposite greenhouse effect, and depending on the size of the eruption, could devastate the world climate for a number of years. i don't want to go so far as saying it would end human existence, but a whole lot of people would be fucked via ash fallout, famine, polluted water supplies, etc.

This happened in the 1800's... I want to say 1816 or 1817. New England never saw the summer and the snow kept falling through June, August, and right into the following winter. It may seem cool to have a 2 year winter now, but think about the amount of money required to go through that. I'm thinking about the cost of heating your house straight through the summers and the cost of having to import pretty much all of your food.

Regardless, though, I think this news is pretty sick. It puts you back into perspective that the world is in charge... not us. Kind of the same feeling I get with avalanches. It shows you no matter how good you are the mountain is still boss.
