idk what your using it for, but if its anything artsy or like video editing or something, get a mac.  its so much better for that kind of stuff.  pc's would be better for work and stuff like that. 

im really dumb when it comes to computers btw.  like you probably shouldnt beleive me.

this. youre less likely to get a virus. id recommend a macbook pro because they are energy efficient, recyclable, and have a 7 hour battery life. you can get them for a pretty good price too if youre a student.

Since you really don't know what you need to do, you could get either a Mac or a PC. 

The advantage of a Mac being that they have go resale value, and you can run Windows on them if you need to somewhere down the road (school?).

The advantage of a PC being that you can the same specs or sometimes even better as a Macbook/Pro for a lower price. Also a lot of PC companies are starting to offer Blu Ray drives in their notebooks.

HP, and Sony are the two brands I go to when I want a PC, with sony being more expensive, but usually higher quality.

Macbooks are more trendy but they are more expensive.

my brother got a freaking awesome lenovo laptop, 4gb ram, 320gb 7200rpm hd, 2.6GHz dual core processor, nice video cards, plus its got all these fancy little features to it (althought unimportant)
it was all under $1000, in fact i think under $900. And its specs are comparable to one of the higher end mac laptops that will cost you an arm and a leg ($1500+).

but all that is over your head. so just find something in your price range and just get it. it doesnt sound like you will be doing any crazy multitasking or needing a lot of storage space

THIS! i am on mine right now... i just picked it up today and if you are a student they will hook it up of $899. this is my second one and i would recommend it to anyone! snow leopard the new operating system is BAD ASS!

i have an acer aspire and i love it


3 gigs of ram, 320 gig hard drive, full hd, hdmi ports, external monitor port. mad usbs..

would deffninitly recomend it

Get a macbook for easy use, reliability, and fucking awesome customer service.

Ex: I dropped mine, still worked. Then the airport was being sketchy so i brought it in, out of warranty, got it back in two days with a new keyboard, casing, and airport, for free. Just saying.

People dont say get a mac for no reason. anyone who has used or owns one knows they are the best for almost everything. He says hes not doing anything in particular. The mac is fast, small, long lasting battery, looks cool, big harddrives, a way more user friendly operating system and easy to use programs. Plus they dont get as many viruses I love my macbook

dude i got a toshiba that is bad ass and only half the price of ac its a satellite and black wid liik like carbon fiber and it has face recognition so no passwords to log in and its super thin and light weight not sure which it is but they make a few that look the same on the out side got it a best buy for 549 before christmas

I just bought an Asus with Windows 7 OS and it's pretty sick

i personally use asus notebooks if you care about a computer guru's perspective. asus only makes apple's notebooks for them...so i enjoy them and feel comfortable in the build quality. you can get many of their notebooks with a backlit LED keyboard which is pretty cool and not all notebooks have them.

plus asus gives a free 1 year accidental warranty to all notebooks regardless of where you buy them. so you can spill coffee on your shit or drop it and they'll fix it for free no questions asked.

sager is another respectable brand.

i use an asus u80a notebook. its like 4.2lbs or something with 6 cell battery. 14" led. 4gb / 320gb HD, t6600 cpu. got it for $599 just before christmas. gets great battery life, and has a really quiet keyboard.

i was strongly considering an ibm t400 also because if you do like to deck your notebook out you can build it with a WXGA+ LED screen which was cool because I was looking to move up from WXGA kinda, but I didn't get to because I didn't want to spend like $70, but it doesn't matter that much really. That $70 will go a lot farther on a new notebook in 2-3 years then it will with a current notebook and the minor changes you make and pay the big bucks for.

cost was a big factor for me.

If you aren't really serious of doing some major video editing (and even then a desktop is preferable), then the only advantage with macs with final cut pro is really out the door. Cost difference in what you get is huge.
You can get some WAY better non-mac laptops for far less money.Infact, you can get hardware that is way beyond what is available in macs for considerably less. This is quite valuable when working with loads, but not important. For instance, the new i7 laptop processors aren't even available for mbp, or quad cores for that matter, regardless, they still run hundreds if not well over a thousand more.! Absurd shit. Better to not have a computer that gets relatively obsolete (or less effective) sooner. Just more money.
I was able to convince people in my studio (granted an environment with tons of 3d modeling, lots of adobe shit, lots of rendering; a need for powerful computers, but we're all poor ass students) without the need about being pious and just a fanboy. I let the computer do the talkin. People with mbp "switched over" because they realized their macs, which are not bad at all, were hideous overpriced and didn't give them the power they needed. it was mostly flash.
I'm not a mac hater, but I fucking hate their prices and what you get. Avoid em, save money, get something better.
