Where to mount my sfb's?

Im looking for some advice here folks. I just bought some bacons from evo in size 182. i was a little torn on the size and woulda preferred a 177 but oh well. so i went with the 182 over the 172, after checkin them out in person at REI, with the idea that i will just mount them a little further forward than i would the 172's so the tips would be similar in length and hopefully they will ski switch better. im am far from the biggest of gents at 5'8 125-130 and i quit growing quite a while ago. this is going to be my 'go to' everyday ski because my other skis are 171 invaders and 179 LL2's. im also going to be doing a fair share of jibbin on these, none in the park though so no rails whatsoever.

so where should i mount them? if you own bacons, where are yours mounted and i do you like your mounting position? advice is greatly appreciated because these are going to be my pride and joys and i really dont wanna fuck up

I believe recommended is like -6, if you want a more forward stance maybe split it and go with -3, or even -2.5, but I wouldn't go much farther forward than that.

ya, i wanna say its -5.5. one of my concerns is that EP chose that spot for a reason and im not exactly gonna go and argue with his mouting point, granted me and him differ in our skiin just a tad.

I can promise you that Eric Pollard doesn't ski his SFB's at -5.5.

thats sorta what i was thinkin, but it seems kinda odd that since its one of his skis they wouldnt use his mounting point as recommended. again, i realize we all dont ski quite on his level so we cant be lumped into the same category.

Rarely are skis "recommended" mounting points where the pros that actually mount them.
My guess is that Pollard mounts his very close if not at center.

But because you're on the smaller side, I think that 182 would be a little harder to throw around if you mounted it much more forward than -2.

Well, Line's website says the recommended mounting point is 63mm back (or -6.3), but that doesn't mean that's where Pollard rides it. So that means the Core Center is -6.3 from true center, which would be the optimal riding stance for cruising around forward. But, you want a more progressive forward stance for going switch which is why I'm thinking -3 or -2.5 from true center would be best (I'm gonna guess, but not 100% sure that's EP rides somewhere around there). Where ever you end up mounting it, make sure you measure it out and mark it somehow so that it get's mounted there, cause you don't want to go through all this and have it mis-mounted.

you dont have to worry about that. normally i dont seek a second opinion but if you cant tell im insanely nervous about fuckin these up because i just dropped a weeks wortha pay on them and i might cry if somehow they get fucked. thanks for the griffs btw, they are goin on the puppies

That is one that I haven't ridden - the only wide ski I've skied from Line is the Lizzies (and Anthems, but I think of wide as over 100). Being on the East Coast I really don't have much need for a ski that's much more than 100 underfoot.

I'm 6'1 165lbs.
They were 182's.

I skied them up at Big White on about 6 inches of pow. For me, they were super fun. Skied both regular and switch very well. Also did well in the air and were quite predictable. (Took them in the park for a lap) If I were to get a pair, that is where I would mount them for sure.

But for you, since you're a bit smaller than me, I would say 2.5 back. I think this will still give you plenty of float and still be very skiable switch/usable in the air.

I'm 6'1 170 so I have them in 182. They are my everyday ski. 1 to 1.5 cm from true center with my FKS gave me almost a perfectly centered ski weight wise. I ski everywhere. and I like to ski backwards.

I got a pair of the 07/08 ones used this year, and I have them at -6. Haven't skied them too much, but I took them out for a day on the weekend and they were pretty dope. I skied pow, moguls, crud, and a little park and they were really sick everywhere (except for moguls). I especially noticed that switch was amazingly fun and easy - I would rather ski these switch than my centermounted walls.

This was also really bugging me because I got my bacons used and already mounted (fit my boots perfectly fortunately) and after studying Idea I have determined that pollard's heelpiece is in approximately the same place as mine, meaning he doesn't ride his bacons centered. I think he probably has them closer to -6. Also consider the fact that he uses these as his all mountain ski. And I have a feeling Line is a company that would put recommended where Pollard actually rides them, but that's just my opinion.

question here for someone who really knows there shit, or at least more than me... which isnt hard. why, if the sfb is nearly symmetrical, is the recommended mount so far back?

Most likely it has to do with the flex points and the side cut of the ski.

Does the SFB have the early taper in the tail too, or only nose?

If it's nose only then that of course pushes the narrowest point of the ski towards the tail.

Hmm... I have the 07/08 ones sitting on the floor of my room and the tail looks either not very tapered or not tapered at all. However, these are a few years old - its possible that they changed them, but I can guarantee you the tails are less tapered if they are tapered at all.

i have them in 182, i am 6'2", they actually measure out to 178cm tip to tail so your good in the department of wanting them being shorter and they ski real short
i mounted mine +3 from rec -3 from true center, i personally wouldnt go any farther forward at my size i would go back like -4 back from true would be ideal for mostly pow skiing but still a fair amount of all mtn and a little bit of park if you wanted. but at your size id say -3back would be ideal for what i just described for myself and 2-2.5 back would be a little better for more all mtn and switch riding, id say you would still float well and it would still preform well, and about ep mounting his i have only seen him ride "bacons" in the park in the last few years but then again who ever knows what he is riding with all the protos line will just throw a topsheet and base on one of his skis on anything. like in hunting yeti he rode some ep's or something like them with a 09 topsheet in some/most of the jump scenes.

got another question for ya guys. why, since im smaller, would it be better for them to be mounted back? what is the reasoning/logic behind these recommendations? my 179 LL2's are center and i ski them just fine

whoops, i misread what you said but bigspence in a few posts up said that he skied them at 1.5 but for someone my size he would do 2.5.

I have the 182 SFBs from last season. The recommended point is 6cm back from true center.

I have mine at 3 back, and it's pretty good for all mountain. Keep in mind that I'm 6' though so I need all the tip I can to stop tip dive. But I like to ride switch a fair amount so I wanted it further forward than -6. I still get some tip dive, and they don't carve 100% perfect switch either being 3 back from center. I lose a little bit of both worlds, but that's expected for a non-rockered ski mounted between center and recommended. They are super fun all over the mountain and turn like whoa.

If you're shorter and lighter and this years are rockered, you won't need to worry about tip dive so you could mount further forward with less consequence. I think 1.5 to 2cm back from center could be a good point to mount at for all mountain performance and jibbiness.

some people say they are and some people say they arent. before i bought them went to REI to check them out and they clearly had rocker when i put them on the ground and stood on them.

but yea, im not worried about floating because these thing are huge for me and on deep days, over 10", i have my LL2s to keep me up top. so im thinking the closer to center i am the better, i havent made up my mind yet but i know im goin anywhere from center to -2 at the furthest.

I was under the impression that this year's had a little early rise or mini-rocker, and next season they will have full-blown rocker. I could be wrong obviously.

But yeah at your size, I'm thinking closer to center is best for you.

Yeah I guess that was just a rumour during last season. Line's site mentions no early rise for this season.

mine are still wrapped and gorgeous next to my bed so i dont know about them, but the ones at REI clearly had tip rocker. you know how on a rockered ski the tip vibrates like crazy when you hit it when the skis are on the ground, the bacons were doing that.

but im just goin by what what i saw, held and stood on, the ones at rei were rockered. no question about it. dont believe me fine. but why would i lie about somethin like that, especially to a bunch of strangers?

i didnt measure it, but it was minimal in height compared to my LL2s but it seemed to run a good distance of tip of the ski. but nonetheless, it had some sort of early rise shit goin on.

brunge, you are correct, mine are NOT rockered. i have no idea what was goin on with the ones at rei but mine are not. who knows, maybe a bunch of fatties were flexin the crap out the ski there.

anyways, back to the point. thanks for the help guys. any other opinions are appreciated
