Watching ski aerial olympic qualifiers in Utah on TV and regardless of what is "cool" or not, this is bad ass. I have a feeling that after Vancouver this year alot of these guys (and girls probably) are going to be killing it in the freeskiing world! Maybe not, but I'm curious what people think about this type of skiing.

The thing about all of the olympic skiing its all about being totally rigid and scripted. I like watching freeskiing over comps like this just because olympic skiiers just don't look like they're having fun. But yes, the olympic aerial crew on big mountain would be siick.

I see what you both are saying, but the technical aspect of it is there. You're right though, it doesn't look as "free" as freeskiing. Pretty regimented.

A few observations

Aerials is incredibly rigid. Judging criteria more closely resemble gymnastics, or platform diving than freeskiing. In the same way, there is very little individualism. Aerials skiers all wear the same skin tight one pieces, have the same bag of tricks that are deemed necessary to win, and have no discernible individual style.

Aerials is a sport, whereas fresskiing is a lifestyle. Part of the fun of freeskiing is fucking around on the hill with friends, listening to music, sleeping in the car to get the first chair. Aerials has, in most places, a very strict training programme, similar to ski racing or jumping.


Freeskiing, doubles, triples, whatever, has no real risk of turning into aerials. Maybe some of the tricks may become similar, but that's where the similarities end. In the same way, skiing is not at risk of turning into skating, etc

Im sure they like to ski and fuck around on the hill as well. They're human. But much like any professional when it's time to train its train and train only. In interviews a couple of the skiers have said they like to ski outside of comps with friends. I'm watching it now and there are no skin tight one pieces. And I've seen a ton of different tricks, but as you say, they all do look close to the same because I have no idea what I am looking for. And your last point, about the similarities ending...I'm pretty sure its all skiing, and its all fun. And they are going downhill and not uphill. And anytime you leave the ground it's an aerial.

i have a friend who competes in freestyle (moguls) and aerials. Shes amazing at both, recently came in first at some competition. like possibly Olympic bound.

shes also a much better park skier than me, and just a really really good skier in general. and shes also a really cool person, who likes to fuck around on the hill, listen to music, and SHE EVEN LIKES TO SKI POW!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT! crazy right?

i was there watching it when it was going on. Its crazy how high they go off the jumps and how hard they crash and just get up. No style what so ever though.

I have the opportunity to work with olympic gold medalist Eric Bergoust as a co-coach for my freestyle team and I gotta say he is a fucking badass.  He will dig and shovel on our jumphill for an entire day making on jump, slopestyle jump that is, perfect.  He has some of the most fun out of anybody on the mountain.  I agree that aerials has no style, it is basically gymnastics.  Which is cool in its own right.  But the athletes do have fun I can guarantee it.  Moguls is also fun as I have done it.  But my true love is slopestyle.  I think skiing is fun in general doesnt matter what kind.

Im glad I'm not the only one who thought this was pretty sick! The style is way different, and I'm no one to say which is more legit, but I was watching it and it made me proud to be a skier. We are represented in so many different aspects of the sport. I'm starting to get the oplmpic buzz even if there isnt any snow in BC this year. Tomorrow Im going to the park to work on my pencil spins and helicopters. haha

its sick in its own way i guess but i am no fan, thats for sure.   Im sure it takes skill and i am sure the athletes dig it and what not but it just doesnt look like that much fun.
