Brakes in Switch release

many of you have probly broken your brakes when your ski reased riding switch.

why hasnt marker or any other company made a brake that works switch and regular?

my brakes on one of my skis completely detached from the baseplate of the binding (marker as well) yesterday after weeks of having them get fucked up during a switch release, im almost glad they fell off

When you think about how brakes work, they would have to totally redesign them to make them work both forward and switch. Considering its only a $10 replacement nobody would spend a lot more money on bindings with those fancy hypothetical brakes, so probably nobody has the motivation to spend the time and money designing them.

Or they have tried and it is actually a bitch to make something work that way and they just haven't been able to do it yet. I know I get pissed when it happens because the repair shop at my mountain only carries snowboard repair stuff so I'm done for the day if it happens to me. I could just buy spare brakes but fuck spending money when I don't have to lol.

Replacement brakes at the 3 different places that I've gotten brakes has been 40$. I just fix them myself now with pliers and a screw diver until they are so fucked that I can't ride. Then i spend 40$

Damn nig that is expensive. The shop I go to always charges me $10 for the brake and puts it in for free. Maybe its the kind of bindings you have? I know brakes aren't universal, maybe they are cheaper for some bindings, mine aren't very high quality.

I have Jib Wide. Maybe I just get screwed everywhere. Though today at stowe this guy in repairs fixed up my shit for free. Day Saver.

if your not an idiot and use breaks that fit your skis properly then they wont hang over and they wont be able to catch on the snow

My friend just snapped one of his jester brakes (fitted correctly) the other night.  Being a mech. engineering student, i think i might start brainstorming a new brake system for shits and giggles.

I think it would be the easiest thing on a binding to change.  I'm stunned no one has made one yet, the design would be so simple.  The brakes just need to be made to rotate another 90 degrees, so if you land switch and eject they keep rotating (instead of bending) and stop at the same angle, just facing the opposite direction.  Basically if you pull your brakes down and imagine that they keep going another 90 degrees before they stop, that's what I'm imagining.

or maybe its the force of your brake bending towards the nose of your ski when your binding releases when your going switch. hang over is not the problem in my case.

I had this problem with Marker Jesters (back in '07, design may have been tweaked). I used a 90mm brake and had them mounted on Walls (87mm) so a pretty much perfect fit. The FIRST 540 I did resulted in a broken brake (not just bent, the plastic base plate snapped too). This was on a nicely groomed park jump and I landed well enough that I didn't even fall over when my ski came off.

I took it back to the shop and they replaced the brake for free. I did maybe 2 or 3 more 5s and then the brakes burried themselves again and I double ejected, they just bent this time though. I bent them back and out of the way as best I could but it happened 2 more times. I've never had this happen with any other binding other than some pivots that were real old and rattly.

I think the problem is that the brake on the Jester has a bigger scoop on it than normal to help stop skis in powder a bit better I'm guessing. There's a slant on the back that causes them to self-bury as soon as they touch the snow when landing switch.

I don't want to bag the Jesters though, they were good bindings otherwise and I haven't seen many others have as much of an issue as me with landing switch on them. I would buy them again for the right price and just try to modify the brake a bit.

I think if you modify the plastic "scoop" bits on the ends of the brakes it would reduce the chance of this happening. Have a look at the shape of them and think about what happens when the brake touches the snow a bit on a hard switch landing, it's wedge-shaped which causes it to bury itself deeper. Like if you're chiselling a piece of wood, it will work very differently depending on which way up you have the chisel. Try cutting or filing the plastic so the wedge goes the other way. This way it's more likely to just bounce off the snow than bury itself and damage the brake. The downside is that the brake won't be quite as effective at stopping the ski when it comes off.

Those don't have a lateral release though. 

Actually the FKS/Pivots don't have a lateral heel release either, the heel piece just pivots to assist in lateral toe releases.  You can't release laterally from the heel pieces because those bars that hold the dildo piece to the ski are in the way.
