You make some good points, and ten years ago, I would have agreed with every one of them. But in todays market, no one is spending the type of money that its going to take to really run Whistler they way it should be run. Whistler has passed the point of being run like a ski resort, and has moved into mega corp status. Even if the buyer only runs Whistler and not other resorts, you arent going to see it run like any other mountain in the world.
Someone should shoot Richard Branson an email. A Virgin owned resort targeted at the young snow riding demographic would do well, seeing as how the older demographic is too worried about their portfolios to be skiing right now. The target audience for ski resorts over the next few years should be young, folks entering the workforce that haven't had any holdings, and therefore, havent lost anything in the recession. Unless you own a house, or have a large stake in the market, most people are doing "ok" with the recession.
