SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Children taking to the slopes in California would have to take a helmet along under a new law proposed in Sacramento.

California Sen. Leland Yee introduced the bill last week. It would require children under 18 to don a helmet. If they don't, their parents would face a $25 fine.

The San Mateo Democrat says he drafted the bill after seeing a study that showed helmets can cut in half the risk of serious head injuries in children 15 and younger.

The California Ski Industry Association has pledged its support.

At least one lawmaker, however, is opposed. Republican Tom Harman told the Los Angeles Times the bill brings up the question of how far government should go in protecting people from themselves.

The bill is still weeks away from any discussion.

Goddamn there´s so much retardation in this thread.

You should wear a helmet. Final. If you fall, fuck yourself to braindamage, it´s not good for anyone. The skiresort could get sued, major bills to healthcare, your life is fucked blabla and so on. In a worst case scenario people could end up losing their home if their kid bailed hard and they don´t have inscurance.

Should the government decide if you have to wear one or not? Nye. It would make sense here in Norway cuz your ass eats up tax payers money every second it´s lying in a hospital bed.

However, in the US, it´s not really that much of a problem for the government if you brake your neck, the state don´t have to pay you shit anyhow, so I don't see why they can´t let skiresorts/individuals decide for themself.

Most emergency rooms in the US are subsidized by the government.  Emergency rooms are not really profitable because everyone gets treated and a large fraction of patients are unable to pay their bills.  ERs are probably closer to profitable in ski towns (because skiers are generally rich and can pay the bills compared to a metro), but it's still something to think about.

ok whether your in the backcountry or park it doesnt fucking matter. pull your god damn head out of your ass and get with the picture. just because you can ski doesnt mean shit. the reason people wear helmets is because of all the other idiots on the mountain that dont know how to ski that will hit you and injure you.  and you dont just fall on snow, you fall on ice and hard packed snow. which is just as dangerous as concrete. stop being a little bitch about it because its going to save peoples heads.

I on one hand do not like the idea of it being mandated, but I can understand.

Even though we don't have "public" healthcare, if little jimmy fucks up his head bad and suffers a life altering injury, he very well may become a financial burden to taxpayers through disability and other such ways.

It's a fine line to walk for sure.

you guys are insane. Helmets save lives. In Alberta there is a mandatory helmet rule for minors for biking and no one complains like you guys. holy crap. People all the time die from head injuries in skiing but you guys are just turning a blind eye and ignoring the fact the a helmet will someday save your life.

If the government isn't taking care of the health care, then they need to stay out of this issue because really, it is none of their business. If someone gets hurt, its all on the insurance companies, or the person themselves. America needs to get with the whole "universal health care" concept, then start enforcing rules, because only then will it actually have a monetary effect on the country.

well said

this is not quite that bad as it is only for minors, but i know all too well the stupidity of such laws, in my province everyone must wear helmets when they skateboard, bike, rollerblade etc which is enforced by a 150 dollar fine.

to anyone saying helmet laws are no big deal...try paying hundreds of dollars on a minimum wage job for tickets and being constantly harassed because you where minding your own business

That sucks.  I feel for you.  For real. 

Story from Hansel:  Last Saturday my 7 year old son got crossed up skiing a little tree trail and went face first into a lodge pole pine.  I wasn't there but his coach told me about it.  He was wearing a helmet, but the helmet never even touched the tree.  When I found out about it, it scared the crap out of me, and I got up about a 3 times that night and went in and checked on him.  No concussion luckily.  

I have worn a helmet since the beginning of last season.  Kids in the Vail Development Team program are required to wear helmets.  Even if they weren't, I would still have my kids wear them.

All that said, I still think it's just wrong to DICTATE what people have to put on to protect themselves.  It's probably wise to wear a flack jacket in certain parts of the country, but should that be a requirement too?  You can't protect everyone from everything, and when you try, you just end up pissing people off.

Too late, it already happened. I can see how someone so sensitive and simple would want more government regulation. What should the minimum temp allowed by law for your bottle be little baby? As long as it's warm enough you'll have nothing to worry about.

not a bad idea at all in my opinion
i ALWAYS wear just a hat but i decided to wear a helmet this weekend and got a gnarly ass concussion...would probably be brain damage if I didn't have one on. Trying a k fed...nothing too intense
