Another Hard drive thread

Looking for a portable hard drive for all the footage of this year. Working with AVCHD, so Im thinking I  would prefer a larger drive (320/500.) I also want firewire 800, so far I have found two that look tempting, the Lacie 320gb rugged @ $130 and WD passport studio (320gb @ $120 & 500gb @ $150)
The difference between the two, the WD isnt rated to any drop and spindle speed is 5400 rpm. The Lacie is rated, and has a speed of 7200 rpm.

Now my questions are am I overlooking any other options (cheaper) and will the difference in spindle speed affect the performance?

You should have both...the Lacy to bring with you as a dump drive, and the big WD at home backing it all up.

Right now I have a WD 500gb Studio that I am backing everything up onto.. Im looking for a portable drive so I dont have to carry that brick around with me when I travel.

Already leaning that way, just need to know if spindle speed is THAT important,
320gb @ 7200rpm for $130
500gb @ 5400rpm for $140
500gb @ 7200rpm for $185

Is spindle speed worth the price? If so, Ill stick with the 320gb, but if not I would love the extra 180 gigs for $10. All three of the drives are triple interfaced..

get the lacie rugged i have that (7200 rpm) and a iomegga fw 800 5200 and the lacie is much better

I got a Toshiba 1TB. And i love it. 1TB takes forever to fill up so you won't be dissapointed. Its highly portable and looks appealing.

I have 4 of the 320bg rugged drives.  I wouldn't use any other drive, for travel or at home.

I used to use WD passports, but now am running the rugged drives. What is so amazing about them other than the speeds/connectivity/durability? Are they just dependable?

I'm not sure where you've been looking but I often buy hard drives from Newegg.com, they have a good system to browse and narrow your options down.

I've recently purchased a few iomega drives, good stats for the money, haven't put em to use yet

its dope. can do firewire 800/400 and usb. no powersource needed. i have it now. love it!

My computer doesnt have esata, and Im not looking to run usb 2.0

I have been checking B&H as well as Newegg but Im sure that they dont carry every drive out there.

Jwenz, Im guessing since it didnt specify, that the spindle speed is 5400rpm, what are you using your drive for/have you ever had any speed issues? Also how long have you been using the iomega?

i use mine strictly for final cut pro and capturing p2 footage. never really had an issue. sometimes actually when watching long clips from my camera to computer there is some lag but i doubt it is related to my hard drive. i have been using it since maybe september sometime. only annoying is the white flashing light. its very bright

Do you edit straight from the external?

eheath - which means nothing seeing as I will be using 800..?

I do edit straight from the external. the only time i have an issue is when logging and transfering from camera. which i dont think is the hard drives fault. and when i edit there is never any issue really. you are just doing pictures right? or video?

Both, but I am less concerned with the photos. Editing avchd from a Canon HFS100 to a mac book pro with 4gb ram. I just dont want the hard drive to be a bottle neck if it doesnt have to be.

Performance Comparison - FireWire vs. USB 2.0   Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire and then USB 2.0 show:
 
    Read Test:  
  • 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
  • 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0
      Write Test:  
  • 5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
  • 160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

Please learn your facts before stating that.

is that test based on FireWire 400 or 800 because his statement was based off the 400 to USB 2.0 being similar in speed

but he also said 800 is the illest in a post below that
