Crack in the base

Hi!

I discovered that one of my skis had a long crack in the base (between where the bindings are) running along one of the edges. Hard to explain how it looks like, but I think that a part of ski has been 'smashed' into the core or something, after hitting rails.

When I feel the crack, I can feel that the base and edge on the outer side of the crack is not on the same level as the rest of the base... Click for larger image Do you think this can be fixed? if not, do you think atomic guarantee will cover it?

its cause you dont wax them regularly.

yeah i'm with the other guy. wax your skis more. they can be fixed tho. and i think atomics come with like a two year warranty but idk. i spend a lot of time on rails and i've had no issues. but i wax my skis and ptex em like crazy so yeah.

I wax my skis quite often, every 3rd time i ski i wax them. and i've just had them since december

send a friendly e-mail to the manufacturer and ask wether this is normal...

cause i've never seen cracking like that happen on a ski....

that is a big chunk of broken sidewall. it is crushed into the core and the base is collapsing because the sidewall isn't attached to support it.

not really fixable, thats huge. if you bought your skis less then a year ago and they don't look like they have been abused or hit rails it may be covered, i have seen alot of broken sidewalls and edges, that one takes the cake. thats a huge fail. i would say its a manufacturers defect. or you just hammer the shit out of rails.
i had a pair of skis fly off my roof rack 2 years ago and got ran over by a truck and they didn't look that bad.

So if the shop can see that I've hitted rails with them, it is not likely that I get my skis guaranteed?

I went to the shop where I bought them, they said that when you rail you're going to get your skis destroyed, but they said that they will take a look at the ski and see if they will guarantee it or not.

If they say no, do you guys know of any good arguments I can use to get them guaranteed? I've only skied 10 days with them!

If they (the shop) refuse to guarantee them under warranty then there a couple things you can do. One is contact the company directly, this may or may not be a good idea depending on the rail damage.

In the UK we have a consumer law that says something like, the manufacturer has to prove there wasn't a manufacturing fault if the product goes wrong within the first 6 months. There might well be a law like that in Norway as well. Sidewall collapse that bad caused by rail use within 10 days seems unlikely so you have a pretty clear case for a manufacturing fault.

Its not a crack due to a dry base which can happen with the use of fluorocarbon wax it will actually dry the base out to the point of cracking, it seems to simply be a jagged base rip, that could be associated with rail damage or just a rock, also it looks as if the edge on the opposite side of the crack is starting to pull out, can't really tell if that's just pulled edge, a core compression or nothing, hard to tell from the pic.
