What is a good dog food???

So I have a 6 month old German Shepherd mix and I have been feeding him Science Diet large breed puppy food thinking it was good and made from mostly meat (Vet recommended). I found out that is just untrue. What is a good brand that I could feed him that is made of mostly meat? I also like to buy it in bulk so if you know of a good place too, let me know.

most dog foods are cereal based but that's not really something you should avoid. they still have all the protien and other nutrients your dog needs.

unless you would want to feed your dog straight raw meat which is actually the healthiest option, but a hassle and expensive.

like I said in my post... My vet recommended Science Diet. Which is probably just fine but I want food that has meat in it.

my dog eats iams

it comes in huge bags from either costco or petco

be careful when switching foods though, dogs can easily get sick by eating different food. have your dog keep eating the food he/she has been eating, and slowly incorporate a new brand. start off with giving him all the old brand, then maybe 7/8 old 1/8 new brand, then 3/4 old brand 1/4 new brand, etc

wellness is where it's at

it's like health food for dogs

my dog started out on wellness and wasn't very interested in eating so we very very gradually switched her to eukanuba (make sure if you switch food that you do it slow) and she got fat and got diarrhea and it was a mess. now she loves wellness and is the perfect weight/shape...she's just absolutely tiny for a lab

Quite frankly, I think actual food is best for dogs, feed them what you eat (obviously with some restrictions). My dog lived for 18 and a half years and we never fed him dog food. Makes sense to me though, synthetic ingredients aren't too great for you, so why would they be good for other animals?

Diet yes, but the way they get the things they need, I don't think so (don't hold me to that), If they need certain things, give it to them by feeding them real food.

my dog has never eaten a scrap of human food and every night during dinner she lies under the table quietly and if you put human food within reach of her she knows her place enough not to eat it

I have a Border Coller/Husky mix (best dog ever, to be honest), and I just kind of did a test thing.

I have always fed her Nutro. I found this Mounds brand dog food, and it was supposed to be almost exactly like Nutro. So I weened her off Nutro, and put her on this Mounds stuff. With the Mounds food, she went to the bathroom about 3x more, she shed a whole lot more, and got sick a couple of times. She's back on Nutro, and her hair is softer, it doesn't shed as much, and goes to the bathroom a lot less.

It's not Iams obviously like others have said, but I thought I'd share my success story with you about Nutro. I don't know how much Iams is, but Nutro is a bit expensive.

i buy my dog kibbles and bits because kibbles and bits looks like something i would eat. theres different flavors for whatever mood shes in. she eats the best ones first, than leaves the rest for later. hoping i'll come top off her bowl with fresh morsels for her to pick through.

It's colorful good lookign shit, and she digs it from what I gather.

I have a German Shepherd and he eats Royal Canin Shepherd food. He loves it. If you go to their website you can read about ingredients and their benefits and all that.

Nutro or Wellness are some of the best you can get. A bit more pricey but it's wirth it considering it'll help your dog live a healthier life.

my family feeds our dogs this raw meat, its a little disturbing but the dogs love it and its apparently really healthy.

the problem is its fuckin disgusting, and you have to defrost it in the microwave before feeding it two your  dog.

its called "Majestic Raw: for dogs and pups."

its even got a picture of German Shepards on the front of it.

I feed my dog Purina One Lamb and Rice flavor. Whenever he gets tired of the flavor, he stops eating it for about a day and we go and buy another bag of chicken and whatever. It's kind of weird, we have 2 bags of dog food at all times, because he gets bored of one really fast and then switches. It costs the same amount of money as if I was just buying one, cause it takes twice the time for him to eat both.

And the expensive stuff is the best stuff.

Im a technician at a vet clinic and all the doctors and the majority of the other technicians feed Purina pro plan, its one step above the Purina one line and completely worth it. If your dog is over 12 weeks old I recommend feeding her only adult formula because the puppy chow can cause your dog to put on excess weight, and if you have had the dog spayed/neutered it is also recommended that you feed only 2/3 the recommended amount on the bag because their metabolisms slow down considerably after the surgery.

After reading all the comments I upped all the karma that deserved it, unless I already had you at 10 then I couldnt lol.

But, I know about switching slowly to not upset his stomach. Also, money doesn't matter to me as long as he is eating healthy and its something that will benefit him. Honestly he eats (price wise) a lot better than me by large amounts. I will research all that was suggested and see what I can come up with.

just because you give the dog human food doesnt mean they beg.


we mix human food in with my dogs dog food every night, but its AFTER we eat, and she gets it in her bowl not off the table
