Is there life after ACL surgery?

So, I was at a new mountain this past weekend and I was having one of the best nights of my life.  Threw down my first ever 450, multiple 540s over a forty-five foot table, and even a big front over that same table.  I was so pumped and lovin life until we went back to the same rail I 450'd off of earlier that day. I came off, my ski landed wrong, and my knee felt like it exploded.  After a bit of screaming it didn't feel as bad as before so I just iced it every night for the next couple of days.  I could walk and it wasn't that bad, but I still got it checked out to please my mom.  I now have to have surgery next week and I's scared shitless.  I;ve never had surgery before and I'm not going to be able to ski the rest of the season, or play lacrosse my senior year.  I just need some vibes because this sucks so much.  I've been crying for about 24 hours now, and life just sucks. It also doesn't help that my ski hill is right across the street for me to wake up and stare at every morning.  Any advice for what to do with my life?

yes there is life after a knee injury!! don't get down!!

I had a similar experience my senior year.  on january 1st of 08 i shattered my knee cap, i felt just like you.  i was supposed to go to france the following week, and had already signed up for many of the major comps. i was truely bummed..  but just look at it this way you'll have the rest of your life ahead of you! I assume you have college to look forward to next year, can't beat that!! haha. 

Just let keep your spirits up, you'll come out of this with a new apreciation for the sport you love, and a more concentrated approach.

Sorry to hear that, but yes there is plenty of life. I once knew a mogul skier named Chris Tamborelli who blew out his knees 6 times. He still could get pretty nasty.

one word REHAB... pre and post surgery. Put all your blood, sweat, tears and energy into it. when you would have gone skiing go to gym. i tore my acl almost a year ago.. and am happy report that i am back skiing stronger and better than ever. just try to make a positive out of a negative and think how much stronger you will be when you come back

I just had surgery on my acl back the first week of December. It's not fun but your going to be fine the surgery goes quick, and the next day your in rehab.! But untill you have surgery rehab hard, and once you come out rehab hard but dont over due it cause if you push to hard you might mess it up more.. ++vibes to you and good luck

why does every girl in freeskiing have such horrible issues w/ knees? everytime i turn around another girl that skis big mountain/park tore their ACL for the first or second time. do they have thinner or weaker ligaments than guys?

yeah in september i tore my mcl in my team's first hockey game of the season. i missed about the first month and a half of my season and just had to do rehab to heal it up. you really got to work hard at rehab. ive done it for my back and knee now so ive realized how much it can pay off. it may seem like its not doing much but it really is, especially if you want to heal up as quickly as possible. fortunately i didnt miss any of the ski season this year but i can feel some pain in my knee every once in awhile. i started wearing one those hardcore metal knee braces that you see pro football players wear. i highly recommend getting one even though they can be a little expensive but its worth it to protect your knee from another severe injury.

Yeah for sure get a brace, from what everyone says Get either a Donjoy brace or the CTI brace that they fit you for..

yeah my coach gave me his old one thats like 10 years old he said. it kind of looks like a CTI...they're legit, i havent had a major problem with my knee since i got the brace

my boy did the same shit...slayed a cliff but landed on some rocks and broke his kneecap along with tearing his MCL and ACL...the unfortunate part was that he was goin to slay aspen the next week so he had to give up his ticket...he's back to slaying it now, lil puffy and swollen after skiing and a little painful but it should get better...keep your hopes up...its early enough that you should be shredding fine start next season

for serious hardcore skiers 100+ days/year that go big there are those who have gotten surgery and those who are eventually going to get surgery.  You simply went from 1 club to the other (welcome - welcome, welcome, welcome). 
ITs a drag and takes a long time to recover from.  So get ready to bust your ass and get back in shape for next season.  If you give up and cry you will never be the same.  If you get hyper focused and are determined to kick ass and take names you will surprise yourself at what your body can do.

believe me,,, there are way worse things to do to your body skiing than a torn ACL

that is a super common injury and is not a difficult one to repair come back from

i tore my acl mcl and tore my hamstring 12 inches off my pelvis. the acl was the least of my worries haha

i tore my acl and mcl at the same time has surgery got that fixed up but was always having problems with it when i skied but then i got a knee brace for skiing and it helps a ton

Not so much hips but thats part of it maybe. The notch in girls' femurs is more narrow than guys' so there's less room for the ACL to move when the knee is twisted. That's why girls are more likely to tear them.

i have had five reconstructive surgeries including two acl repairs and yeah there def is life afterwards. since my last knee surgery i have learned pretzels, 270 and 450 disasters and a bunch of new grabs to say a few, also skied 93 days the year after surgery so don't fret just do everything the doctor and physical therapist say....everything.  don't worry about how much the pt hurts or how long it takes, just do it.

I'm pretty sure I tore mine today.  My knee is the size of a softball and I can barely move it.  I just got back to school too.  2nd day at Stowe after coming back for school.  Sucks big time.

well there's life after park skiing, a year away form park will probably do the rest of your body some good... and give you a little more life-long longevity for skiing pow when you're done with the park... cuz realistically, park skiing desn't last much longer than age 25-ish give or take
