100%.! skiing is turning into Rollerbladding with Aerial tricks in the park..

the line catcher event is the future.. as it is the past ( the Freeride event at the world heli challenge has been going down since 1999. on and off)

How many swich ups and dub corks till people relize..

if you cant ski out of the park.. then your not really skiing your just sliding down the hill with sticks on your feet..

Tanner shouldnt have to Apologise.. hes just speaking his mind.. and then everyone gets all butt hurt..

I think its good he talks shit..

especially when there onto something....ie.. what tanner is saying..

Its the reaction he got that I dont agree with.. I think hes proven him self enough times that he should be able to call people out .. even his friends.. surfers do it all the time

its like telling the little aerial kids that surf the shore break to paddle out the back and get some bomb sets.. or go surf a gnarley reef..

The thing about Seth is I remember him saying in one of the recent TGR movies that skiing with the Jibbers he was skiing with was "Holding him back" a comment which upset me at the time.

Much like Tanners comments upset a lot of people.

The freedom we have as freeskiers to slide and glide down the mountain in any shape or form is what defines us.

skiing is skiing. I like to ski park because i cant ski bc in illinois. I would prob still ski park in utah. Its not like just because i ski park i cant ski anywhere else, thats a stupid conclusion.

skiing has so many different things about it and thats why I love it so much, it has more diversity than any other sport, people will do what ever they want to do or have access too, just because someone rides pow doesnt mean that they are a "real" skier, shit doesnt matter and do what ever makes you happy, thats why we all go up to the mountian, thats why we pay insane amounts of money on gear and tickets, thats why some of us have made a back yard setup, because it is fun! get over what other people are doing and just do your own thing

Line Catchers and other mini-golf events are NOT the future of skiing. The weather/snow conditions matter too much. Line Catchers and Back 9 were fun novelty events, but that's all they'll ever be.

we all like to ski... just different aspects.. let's let the topic die already..

 tanner is an idiot for yelling all that and thinking it wouldnt make it to the web. he said stupid shit and alcohol is not an excuse. we hold our pros to a higher standard and his yelling was just unacceptable. people look up to you tanner... have a little more class.

Tanner, oh Tanner Hall. He's like a 13 year old trapped in a 26 year old body. There are so many aspects of skiing. I remember 6 years ago there was an arguments about the very same thing on this website for months. What about Gorilla steez? For awhile park skiing wasn't in movies (after happpy dayz we saw a lot less). Now there is a shit ton of park segments. What people need to realize is that everything is on a pendulum swing. A couple years from now when doubles and switch-ups are played out tanners "real skiing" will be the most popular genre of skiing. But when a PRO brings something new to the table much like Jon did with the doubles then genre of Park will be on top until that new trick and variations of that trick are played out.

Tanner was right to apologize for calling out Dumont and Colby and such. However, I don't think he has to apologize for voicing his opinion on the direction of the sport.

I'd agree that there is more to the hill than the park and it's good to get out there and just ride, go fast and make turns. That's my opinion though. I also don't really have a problem if somebody stays in the park all day, I just think one should sample all the mountain has to offer (unless you hill is one big park). Don't do what's not fun though. If for whatever reason you don't enjoy going mach 7 down some steep slope than don't. If you hate rails or jumps but love jibbing natural stuff than go for it.

YOU don't think Tanner had to apologize. Bottom line is Tanner does not give a shit what you think. He wanted to apologize because he didn't mean to call out his friends. He clearly didn't mean what he was saying he just said it as a heat of the moment thing. Like I've said since the first "Real Skiing" thread. Skiing is what you do when you put on ski boots and attach skis to them.

Exactly!!!! They are sick and super progressive, but impossible for 99.9999% of people and totally dependent on conditions.

What skiing is is SUBJECTIVE, and what makes the sport so great is all the different directions people take to evolve the sport and keep it diverse!

I think what Tanner was trying to say is that our sport due to its increase in popularity, has become like snowboarding where kids buy a board never take a lesson and just sit in the park without ever learning to really ride. Many park skiers thesedays forgo learning how to actually ski, and instead head to the park. All of the pro skiers are both excellent park skfiers and excellent skiers overall. Tanner started his career skiing moguls while many other proskiers raced  or skied arials first. Our sport has begun to diverge away from the fundementals of skiing and that is what these guys are trying to say. Just learn to get down the mountain first and then hit up the park.

Yes.

Why is everybody all butt hurt?  A bunch of pros have said things about 'real skiing' meaning not man packed groomers and especially hand rails stuck in snow in the middle of a mountain.  They mean skiing natural lines/places...  Oh and one of the best park skiers(Tanner) ever said his favorite time skiing ever was the pillows in Japan(in Believe, I think) and I think has said a few times that this is better than park, and years ago I remember him saying something at the end of a big pipe comp(cut up sunny pipe, considered small by todays standards) along the lines of "I'm going to get out and do some real skiing now".

I think park rats are going to get really butt hurt over this thread for the following reasons
1)Once they aren't in the park the are literally as good as your average tourist and they know it
2) They think park is everything but in reality the true essence of skiing is all mountain even though park is still really fun.

I agree everybody should try to get out of the park and start throwing down some backcountry shit

Skiing is skiing, whether you're in the park or in the backcountry. Every aspect has it's own way of riding it. I bet dudes like Seth or Sage can't throw double corked whatever the fuck they are as good as guys like Dumont or Wallisch and I be those two can't rip lines as hard as Seth or Sage. It's just the way it is, people get good and ski what they want to ski, nothing wrong in that.

Tanner wasn't wrong in saying what he said, it's his opinion. Sure he dissed those park dudes by saying big mountain is where it's at but that's his opinion.

What have we learned?

That skiing is sick, be it tossing an 810 casually onto a down rail, or stomping the gnarliest line in Alaska, or throwing down a switch-up to underslide, or launching 120 foot double front flips (K2 Skeeze cover, 2007).

I prefer big mountain gnarliness, but I can appreciate what the park rats are doing. I don't want our sport to fall apart into separate camps of hatred for silly reasons- look at what happened to the difference between BMX and MTB- one sport split into two factions, discriminating based on the size of their wheels. The two are getting more and more chill with each other every day, but it's taken a while.

I wouldn't want two brands of freeskiing to split the way two brands of freeriding bikes did.

skiing is about making yourself happy... do it for yourself.. don't worry about what Tanner, or anyone else says or thinks..... wether you're shredding on 2 boards or 1, riding park, big mt, racing, jibbin rails, or urban, if you're having fun on the mountain, we share a similar bond... thats why skiing is hellla sick....

There's just something about going out into the BC and riding a gnarly line without civilization anywhere near you. Just one with the mountains. Anyone who skis only park completely misses this experience, and anyone who doesn't even want to ski that is a different type of skier completely. When you're stoked on big mountain and backcountry it's pretty easy to feel superior to the people who are missing out on it, whether by choice or not. That feeling can't be beat. Remember, Tanner didn't ski big lines until way into his career, and obviously fell in love with it. In his mind and his experience BC is superior to park.

Don't get me wrong, I love skiing park. But would I take the opportunity to ski endless pow, pillows, cliffs and BC lines if I had to sacrifice park forever? No question.

OP fuck off. Skiing is what you make. If skiing rails is your thing, then ski rails till your hearts content. This applies to any discipline of skiing, it is what you make it. And tricks in the BC wouldn't be where they are today without the progression of park skiing.

No one should talk shit about seth morrison, he invented park skiing along with JP and a few others.   They introduced the world to this type of skiing and twin tips.   There untouchable in all respects.

Tanner is the founder of one of the biggest companies for skiing in the world, he should be able to say what he want.   He decides who goes pro and who doesnt.   Seeing what tanner said is very true, park skiing has gotten so advanced that it gets boring to watch because it damn near impossible to do those tricks.   And Tanner has earned the right to get DRUNK and run his mouth.  

Also Big Mt is where skiing came from, it is kinda sad seeing everything from park.   Change it up, some of the urban rats should start skiing lines, it might be fun because they will suck.   I wonder if Henrik or Tom could do an actual line in alaska or japan with no metal around.   Sammy C. has taken his stuff to Big Mt. and his skills have gotten better.   My opinion is tanner was right, skiing needs to go back to it origins and make more contests like the line catcher.  

We all dont have the luxury to do what they do, thats why there pros.   they made the sacrifice.   I havent skied anything but groomers over the last 5 yrs.  but I would rather make one epic location  than spend another season riding groomers again.   Theres alot more disciplines than just park, learn to explore outside the park experimenting with cross country, Biathlons or tele.    I would be surprised if more than a handful of people on this website know what a biathlon is.

You have to realize that not everybody gets the opportunities to ski gnarly lines and be "one with the mountains". Some people never even get to ski outside of their home mountain.

The fact that Tanner was hating on park so blatantly is retarded. Park skiing made him into a superstar, and he wouldn't have any of the opportunities to ride big mountains he's had to date without going somewhere in park first.

Hmmm.... the way I see it, its still skiing whatever you're doing.

HOWEVER, going out into an untamed backcountry zone with nothing but friends, skis and avalanche gear is about as real as it gets - there are no lifts, nobody is grooming for you, nobody built nice jumps for you. You have to go out there, and use a real mountain to do your skiing, and thats what skiing really is - its you and the mountain, not you and some groomed slope, or a perfectly carved half pipe. It is a communion with nature that is intimate and mutually beneficial for both parties.

There are certain steps that need to be taken before you can go do this kind of thing safely, and I recommend everyone go to those measures and experience skiing as it was meant to be.

Yeah I know, which is too bad. That's why I included the part about people who ski park but have no desire to ski bigger mountains or lines.

I didn't see the video of Tanner, I was just speaking from a personal level there. I have no idea what he said about park skiing. I was just going off on explaining how the stoke of the linecatcher event could probably get him to start saying stuff, not justifying what he actually said about park skiing.

I thought what tanner said was kinda douchy whn i heard it. Then, right after i saw it i saw a thread about UK skiers and how raw they are. I watched that video of some british kid doing dry slope jumps and yea i said to myself "yea right that is not fucking skiing."At least not anywhere near what i know as skiing.
