Possibly 100,000 dead. As if Haiti wasn't already in terrible condition, a 7.0 quake just fucked so much shit up... The destruction is horrific.

you seem to be agreeing with me now but that doesn't match up with your first post at all. something about big contries taking land leaving only small poor countries in disaster prone areas.

and i was referring to dominican republic in a general sense not just from the earthquake. Its in interesting case study since they both were former colonies and on the same island, yet are currently in such different states. I'm not sure what point you are making saying 'coincidence'. the dominican republic also falls directly on a fault and there most certainly will be a big earthquake there as well.

they cant do the things you mentioned by themselves. they are one of the poorest, if not the poorest country in the world. they have nothing and DEFINITELY can not pay for better infrastructure or even rebuild for themselves.

no, I completely agree with what you are saying.

but what i was saying, which was merely an observation, was that poor countries always end up in the center of these terrible natural disasters.
when was the last time 100,000 americans were killed in a natural disaster in america?
If this has even happened, it must have been a longggg time ago

im just saying, the trend goes that these smaller and poorer countries seem to end up right in middle of these natural disaster areas.

well i think the main point is that natural disasters can happen anywhere. big, small, rich, poor. they tend to be more deadly in poorer (not smaller, China for example) countries since often times those people are not as prepared as a wealthy country would be. They also often have high population densities and a lack of infrastructure for any kind of rescue/medical care.

but what im saying with the poor getting the disaster prone land is:
like i mentioned before - Katrina hit Louisiana. katrina didnt kill everyone, but it greatly effected many. and who did it effect? the poor black communities. This has nothing to do with racism on my part or anything, its just what happened. most people who suffered from katrina were poor blacks,

the tsunamis in the indian ocean... who suffered? poor communities.

yes, these communities dont have the money to defend themselves, but if they didnt end up in these disaster prone spots in the first place, they wouldnt need to...

you need to word your correlations much better; small and poor alone are not sufficient attributes to account for high death tolls; the top three highest death tolls are located in china -- obviously not a small country

the most accurate common attribute amongst the worst natural disasters is a high density population -- although poverty can often be a significant factor to dense population growth this is not always the case.

also, nation size and founding date are not sufficiently connected; there are many small nations that have been around for ages-- you can't really say that each nation had an opportunity to draft geological locations. I think you can say that people 'inherit' land...as for haiti it's story of origin, at least as colonial settlement, was the 'richest french colony in the new world.' (wiki) It wasn't until a slave revolt overthrew the government that haiti was born.

I'd venture a guess that Haiti's poverty stems from the fact that it has had 32 coups in 200 years.

ide say that atleast part of Haiti's government has absolute shit for brains.

i would imagine if they could get their act together and stabilize the country it could go back to / move forward in being a tourism destination.

Everyone should be weary when donating. Only donate to a trusted company.

personally i wouldnt do the text 5 dollar thing, go to a legit company because there are a lot of scammers out there

Well obviously, but those ships have the capacity of a small hospital. Most of the hospitals in Port-Au-Prince were destroyed, plus it gets people off this island.

By no means am I saying its a permanent solution, but its a start.

Haiti was reliant on foreign aide before this disaster. I cant imagine how terrible this would be.

Conley, come on man a post like that will keep people from donating to the red cross. Don't make this into a debate. The best way to help is to donate to the red cross because we all know you are not going to box up some shit and send it over there. plus it is easy and it is added to your phone bill.

you know that most civilizations have been in their current area for thousands of years right? nobody picked any certain land. that's just where they're from. some societies are structured differently though so when a natural disaster strikes it does more damage than a wealthier nation. natural disaster happen everywhere.

ex: people up in Washington live dangerously close to an active volcano (Mt. Rainier). they're didn't settle there cuz that was the last place to live because they got last pick. you just have to hope and pray it doesn't erupt. much like other disasters. you just hope they don't happen

actually, around the world throughout history people have chosen to live at the foot of a volcano because the soil is so fertile. a lot of very very wealthy people have died from volcanic eruptions since the beginning of humanity because that's where they wanted to live.

One of my best friends from middle school and high school was born in Haiti and he still has family there so everyone pray for Haiti and that the people can rebound from this horrible tragedy.

Your point has nothing to do with "picking the land".  It has everything to do with the fact that when a country is poor there is usually poorly constructed buildings, therefore leading to more damage and death.
Also the lack of money for rescue care/hospitals aids to the death tolls as well.

Rich areas of the world are not exempt from disasters in anyway, it is just that they are built much better, and therefore if a disaster did happen there, they would be much less affected.
