Joining the military

I have decided to join the military when i come of age. Army National Guard exactly. Just wondering if anyone had any tips or other stuff when i go to see a recruiter and such stuff i have done extensive research and shit and i know that it is right for me. Is anyone else in the Guard and can tell me what its like

I'm not going to call you any mean names because you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.

However I would like to point out that the US government funded Al Queda from 1979 to 1989 during the Soviet war in Afghanistan..

Our government can justify this conflict in the Middle East how ever they want so that the majority of US citizens will go along with it. But when it comes down to it the main reason we are over there in the first place is to make sure we have control over the oil.

There is a very good film about a lot of things going on in the world right now. Not just the war that everyone should check out.

I'm in ROTC and after all the interaction i've had with the Guard i think it's kind of a waste unless you have other plans for a job. Try looking into ROTC or at least going Active if you want to make this a career or a job. Recruiters are tricky though and that $20,000 signing bonus isn't shit for enlisting so choose carefully. Getting deployed with the Guard is just bad news bears if you ask me.

the Guard has their place, I really don't think we should be deploying them overseas. They should be used for natural disasters and if shit hits the fan and we have to fight a war on our own turf.

Not really true. We are actually hurting for officers right now in the Army. However, They are being super selective. But the Marine Corps is the branch in trouble now. They are scrubbing all they can for officers because they don't have nearly enough. A ton of the high speed enlisted Marines are going straight to OCS. I personally know 3 haha(Marines that is, I'm Army personally).

You do?  As an Army ROTC cadet you agree that with the ops tempo already at a ridiculously high level, you should not utilize your National Guard?  You want to turn those 18 month deployments into 24?

I kinda get what you mean, not taken badly. I would rather be deployed for 2 years with an active duty unit then 1 year with a National Guard unit. That's an opinion shared by many people. I personally think 4 years active is about a thousand times better 8 years Guard or Reserve (our commission). I was a little drastic with that comment, obviously National Guard units have to get deployed but any more than are now is just a bad idea.

Alright, my bad. I read that wrong. I though you meant utilize your National Guard personally like at commissioning. But like i just said it was a little drastic, we should deploy Guard and such (i wouldn't wanna be with them, but we should). No offense taken.

I decided a while back, being in the military, that no matter what you say you are not going to change the minds of a certain population, both on NS and across our nations states. They can't understand the sacrifice our service men and women do for our country, and quite frankly I don't even want to try to explain it anymore.

there are quite a few active duty and reserve units that seem to be untapped. I know plenty of avtive duty Marines who want to get in the action right now but may not get the chance.

please let everyone have their opinions. just think about one thing. if a country like, lets say iran would attack another country that IS supposed to provide shelter for people that attacked iran, you would be like: wtf, damn nazi-like or whatever

in fact, this whole afghanistan-iraq thing has so much facets, that i myself think its ashame that serious, good people were turned into patriotics that doom their families with their service.

i have respect for them and i know i couldnt do it, but i think it is still for the wrong reasons and you cannot deny that completey.

Iraq is number 12 in terms of oil exports, and number 4 in terms of possible oil reserves. There are much better countries we could have invaded if it was for oil.

Marines are always hurting, it does not matter what it is, they dont have enough of it. Plus they are often attached to the Navy, which would suck balls. The Air Force might be spoiled behond all, but they atleast they arn't the Navy.

the marines are attached to the navy because they were intended to be protection for the navy. If you look at what the marines were created for vs what they are now doing....it's completely different. They really aren't supposed to be in the position they currently are.

They are hurting because there is not Marine Corps ROTC programs all over the nation. They have OCS and Navy ROTC, no one hardcore enough for Corps is gonna waste their life in Navy ROTC.
Plus Marine Officer is kinda an Oxymoron.

I am not just talking about officers, or man power. I am talking about everything; people, guns, vehicals, food, clothing.

In the army you may go a few months on nothing but MREs, but you at least have MREs

Also, every NROTC program has plenty of midshipman who are going to be Marine officers. The reason the don't have as many officers is because it is the most demanding Officer Training School to go through. Also, the Marines consider themselves elite among the forces (which in a sense, they are) and the standards to become an officer are much higher than the other branches. A single DUI will most likely disqualify you for Marine OCS, but it MAY get waivered for the other branches.

Out of all the uninformed bullshit crap that has come out of your mouth so far this is worst and the most unacceptable.

It does not matter how fucking smart and high speed you think you are. You will run into many enlisted guys who are way fucking smarter then you are. Especially the NCO's. The LT who thinks his soldiers, and his platoon SGT are mindless drones is probably going to get himself and a good chunk of his guys killed.

Some of the smartest people I know are NCO's. I know smart Officers, and I smart NCO's.

Also look at the degrees floating around the enlisted ranks. Many of those guys have 4 year degrees, pretty much all graduated from highschool, and there are a few with grad school.
The days of Army or Jail option is over.

Officers need to have an ultimate respect for those serving under them. THE OFFICER IS THERE TO SERVE THOSE UNDER HIM, Not the other way around.

and a DUI will get you tossed from pretty much any officer recruiting program. They MAY let you stay around as a E-1/2 but I doubt you would make E-5.

They are America's Expeditionary fighting force. They go through a tugher basic training, and do more with less. They are in a sense more elite. They have the ability to everything that every other branch does.

And getting a DUI during officer training will get you tossed, but one before does not always mean that you can't become an officer. You seem to know everything about the military though, so everyone else should trust what you say without even thinking about it.

Marines are killing machines (pretty expendable ones), leading a killing machine as the smartest officers (Infantry wise) in the military with the knowledge that you'll die is an oxymoron to me.
Also a DUI will toss you from any pre-officer program.

For the final time for the sake of the thread, a DUI does not mean you have no chance of being an officer. More than one shows a pattern of abuse, thus giving little to no chance but there is still a very small chance. 1 DUI has a relative chance of getting waivered. Almost anything can be waivered in the military, depending on the conduct and your past history. Officers have been commisioned with a DUI on their record and they still continue to be. Waivers are given on a case by case basis.

Yeah waivers for everything, true. But not in the current state of the Military. They aren't just waiving people for the hell of it cause they show no prior abuse, they are booting them from programs. Yeah, every program. So maybe one in a hundred gets to commission but that doesn't mean shit for how many happen.

All these people freaking about guerilla warfare. What do you expect them to do? How else are they supposed to defend themselves. We have a ridiculous amount of money flowing through our military. They can't build an army of tanks from a rocks and amo shells.

It's not like we never used those tactics before.

yeah, its not like they are bitches to fight that way. it is the only way to fight for their wrong beliefs (although the US belief of having to be the world police isnt that much better).

there was this movie, where the character said (i cant remember the name): turn your weakness into a strength. if your enemy is big and youre small, than he is slow and youre flexible.

An infantry Marine is no better nor worse then an infantry soldier. The public just thinks that all Marines are infantry, where the Army has a ton of non combat arms soldiers.

marines are more badass because they trump themselves up as being such. The marines really don't need to exist at all if you look into it. They think they are badass because they can do the same things as the army, navy, and air force, when that's really what makes them useless. Why should we pay for 1 force to get all this equipment and extra training, when we already have other branches that are more capable of doing the job?

In my opinion, US marines should  start to become more like the UK's Royal Marines. Theres only over 7,000 of them, and they aren't meant to be a huge occupying force. Just a quick strike force. How elite and difficult can it be when there's almost 300,000 marines?

not disrespecting or hating on marines, just pointing this out...

The thing I feel sorry for the Marines about is their Recon force gets boned for funding because somehow during the making of the Special Forces bill the Rangers, Delta Force, SEALs, and others got put in it but the Recon battalions got left out so they get fucked in terms of their equipment. Outside of their guns it is all hand me downs essentially and even then their guns are just stock with iron sights and they have to spend their own money to get them outfitted how they want.

If you ever want to join the navy watch all the episiodes of this it shows the reality of being on a ship for 6 months definitley changed my mind about enlisting in the navy, gonna be either an AMT or AST in the coast guard

Delta Force is an elite group of Army Special Forces, they aren't there own spec op groups. they technically "dont exist" and there are only about 200-300 of them. Rangers are the most badass mofo's alive. Next to Army Special Forces.

This, and a lot of officers were once enlisted.  I know stupid officers who managed to squeeze into a commission somehow, as well as stupid airmen/NCOs.  Intelligence or lack thereof is most definitely not exclusive to one group.
