What career are you looking at?

I am basically just trying to get a broad range of different opinions on careers. I have no idea what I want to do, and I am a junior in HS, so hopefully i'll get some posts that can spark some interest.

Sports Broadcasting, currently working on my mass comm. degree for it and currently have a job broadcasting for a junior hockey team. I call the play by play.

Ultimate goal, NFL play by play man which I think with hard work I'll be able to get there its competitive and so am I.


I also have been thinking of working with advertising you make bank in that biz.

Depends what you want out of life...

I personally dropped outta high school to become a ski techy... and don't regret it at all


can always redo education when you're to old to ski or grow out of the seasonal life style

can't say I can see that happening anytime soon.

i am looking at either mechanical engineering or investment/stock analytics. Anyone on here do the later? It seems perfect for me because its all math related, and there are quite a few offices in SLC so its perfect for me.

option 3 is to bum :)

stock analyst or lawyer... or maybe something entirely different I haven't quite decided yet.  And I'm a junior in college haha.  You got plenty of time man.  But its really good that you're thinking about this stuff already.  Just make sure you do something that you aren't going to end up hating

oh shit I think I was writing my post when you said this.  I'm seriously considering it but I haven't started any classes for it yet.  I'm going to try to get into the Applied Investment Management program at my college I'll make sure to let you know how that all plays out and what I think of it.  That kind of stuff has always been really interesting to me though so I think it would be a good fit.  Plus you can make baaaaank :D

Firefighter. I went to school for it, and worked as a firefighter for 6 years. A few years ago, I got into the ski industry as well. I moved out west to get more into the industry. And that's where I realized that the entire industry is based on who you know and who you blow. I'm now working super hard to get back into firefighting. I've got 3 tests in the next couple of months and I'm studying every single day.

i'm 22, with a degree in finance and licenses that qualify me as a stockbroker, investment advisor, and insurance rep. That may sound good, but i've got nothing to show for it. I worked for 8-9 months as a financial advisor after graduating last may and then resigned because i literally did not earn 1 cent from doing it.

At this point i'm unemployed and looking to get into the banking industry. Currently my daily job consists of going to the gym and being amazing at MW2, which sounds fun but it's pretty lame being 22 with no job.

Make that ski magazine your top goal....mine is being a play by play man for the NFL....right now I'm doing a junior hockey team as a sophomore in college...along ways to go...I figure if I'm any good...about the age of 35 I should be there.

I'm a senior in HS and I don't know what I want to do bud. Doesn't really matter, just go with something you like. Chances are you like skiing quite a bit, maybe you want to design ski graphics or promote events or something. You'll figure it out when the time comes.

As for me, something like forestry or water management or just good ol' ski patrol till my legs don't hold me anymore.

Yeah, it's been really bad lately. I told my parents I wanted to drop AP Bio today, and they started to get really mad. They started questioning me on if I was ever going to take any initiative in life and ever find out what I wanted to do. I kept saying I don't know and my dad was pissed. He said how can I not know what interests myself. I know what interests me but I know they won't approve.

I started out with some top medical careers as my outlook, but I started to get more realistic. After throwing out some medical careers, I told them Real estate agent. My dad laughed and said in a real sarcastic tone "wow, really aiming high there aren't ya?" It's not my fault I don't have a clue. There's so many careers out there and it's hard for me to even narrow it down to an area. A lot of things interest me.

To the person above woozy, History is my favorite class but I'm not sure what careers I could make out of that.

yea my mom's friend retired at 35 because she made so much in currency investment. It sound's really interesting and i'm definitely interested in it. What school are you going to right now, and what programs are you focusing on?

I have been travelling through New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand for the past 2 years.

Before I left I was an Arborist (Tree Surgeon) and decided to to work in the same proffesion over in Oz. I cam back from Asia just before Christmas, so I am now broke with no job but I go to France next week (Les Deux Alpes), and then it's onto finding a job until I go uni in September to study Arboriculture. It is the study of tree science, such as pests, soil, diseases etc etc. And I also get to climb round trees all day on a rope and harness with a chainsaw strapped to me......I LOVE IT!

It's kind of ironic though. My dad never went to college. He works a rather mildly above-average job, making alright money. Whenever I asked him what he wanted to be when he was younger he always tells me he still doesn't even know what he wants to be. So I figure the reason he is pushing me so hard to find a career that interests me is because he doesn't want what happened to him to happen to me. I guess he likes his job, but he really never got to do what he really wanted to do, which was be a stock broker.

I wouldn't hate on your parents too much. It sounds like they want the best for you. They know you better than anyone, and know what you're capable of. They just want you to succeed in life, and are pushing you to do so. Believe me, in a few years, you'll thank them for that.

Life is too short to start thinking about where your going to be in 30 years time.

I went to college, dropped out, went to college, dropped out, worked (changed jobs about 8 times in 2 years), then went travelling.

Go travelling dude, it is the greatest experience you will ever have. It seems that Americans don't like the thought of travelling as I only met 2 in 2 years (I met about 1000 Canadins tho....wierd). Come back home, you will have had a bit of life experience tried different jobs to support yourself, and you will have seen other parts of this world othere than your home town. You will then be in a much better place to make an informed decission as to what you want to do with your life. Who knows, you might get your education and go and live in another country which you visited. Thats what I might do, get my degree and move to Oz.

I tell everyone this, you wouldn't belive whats out there.

I'm in college right now with a double major for the exact reason of what your asking, I'm 20 years old and still don't know what I want to do, my advice is to go to a liberal arts school, fuck around for 2 years of college and then figure your life out.

I'm also a junior in highschool and in the same situation. For the longest time I had a plan to become a foot doctor and start my own practice in a ski town. I got to thinking, and wondered if I really want to go through premed, take the mcats, have basically no life from the age of 18 to 26. Then I got really interested in bio/chemical engineering. I then got to thinking what I could do with that kind of degree. I could discover new medicines or work with renewable resources and turning raw materials into usable materials. To me, that sounds like a lot more interesting and fun than being a stressed out, overworked doctor. I guess I'll see what I do when the time comes

Construction Manager is def a good option. limited number of degrees and in few years it'll be back in high demand. especially if you've got a minor in architecture and/or engineering. construction will always be happening and jobs will always be available. you'd start out making 70,000 give or take your first year (basically at age 22 or 23)

Same here.. I planned to be a doctor for a long time and then i realized the whole "no life" thing and decided that wasn't for me. However, recently i've learned about Gene Therapy and it seems to be really interesting and will have a lot of job opportunities in the future, since we can now manipulate genes.

But I'm finishing up a Civil Engineering degree, so maybe after flying I will transfer over to that.  I know a lot of guys who did that and had great success with it.
