Well, long story short, Google is going to be shutting down in China...

...These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered--combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web--have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China.
We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China...

well google did say in their post that they are no longer willing to censor in china. so they could have stopped as of yesterday

You do know how Google works, right? In essence, the results are in order of RELEVANCE of the search + the volume of the same/similar SEARCH +  the number of HITS of the most popular links.

So, even if Tiananmen Square is a historical place and yadda yadda, the craziest shit that has happened there, including the censorship, is the Tiananmen Massacre. I wonder why these pictures of tanks and bodies come up? Hmm..  You can always press "next page" to find something about the square itself.

update from Bloomberg

'series of “highly sophisticated” attacks on Google and at least 20 other companies last month, as well as limits on free speech, led to the decision, Google said in a statement on its Web log. Images of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown were among previously censored results visible on Google.cn today'(1-13)

google is going to lose soo much money by doing that. just walk away from a market share of billions of people.

think about it, how many times a day do you use google, or any other search bar powered by google.
