Summer Jump

My friend and I had an idea for the summer. We want to do a jump with a foam pit in his backyard. We also want to do a cannon rail to the the foam pit and a DFD rail somewhere too.

So we need some advices. His backyard is about 100 feet long. Is it possible to do this. We'll build a starter,a big one and maybe have a bungee rope to give us extra speed.

We don't want this to cost us a lot, but we'll still invest in it, but not a lot, maybe 300-500$. So how can we have some cheap materials and which one is the best to put on the ground for the inrun. Currently, we use golf carpet but is there something better that gives more speed.

We live in Sherbrooke, QC so if you live near and you want to help/jib the set up, we would like to.

i think it sounds doable. esp if, by the sounds of it, you already have a setup of some sort.

Yeah i forgot to mention, we already have all the rail, the cannon and the DFD.  We already have a starter and a good length of carpet. I know it sounds crazy and expensive, but like just for the foam pit, we'll get old matress and get the foam out of them. In our town, we have an '' eco centre'' where there is a lot of them. Also, my friend can weld everything together cause he's studying in this domain, which is a good thing i guess.

matresses are made of springs. might make a good floor for ur pit, but not much else. i would say just spend on the foam, thats whats protecting you from dying and shit.

Yeah but we found some without springs, and at the center, there are some couches with foam, maybe it can help too.

mattress foam and actual foam pit foam are not the same thing. and last time i checked, foam pit squares were like a dollar each, this is coming from a gymnast friend

But will the matress foam will do the job? And how much deep does the foam pit needs to be?

And yes, it is a serious project, I really hope we can make it.

use construction fence for the in run (the orange plastic stuff) if you don't mind not having much grip, for a straight in run it's really fast and cheap.

ya travis pastrana once had a little segment during the xgames showing how they practice, and he had 40,000 foam squares for a dollar each for his foam pit

that was a pretty damn big foam pit though, for moto it needs to be really deep (heavy bike), with this it doesn't need to be as deep or as long (that's what she said)

White lattice fencing slides really well too. If you have trouble with carving just rip it off the lip. And yes, $500 probably wont build this thing, but it will get you started.

5 feet minimum., i jump into them alot biking, and ive hit bottom in 6 footers, but also 5 foots have been fine as long as you land decent. Try a gym like trampoline centre, and see if they have any old leftover foam. they will sometimes give it to you for free

Ok heres the deal. You dont need to buy wood, or foam. The only thing you need to buy is, believe it or not, a pool! Go to any big store, Canadian tire, Wal-mart, Costco, etc... And find a pool with about a 15' diameter and 4' deep. If you dont want to do that, go on ebay and find one without a water pump for cheaper (there only like $300 on sale). Next, get to work and start advertising. Put up posters asking for people to give you their unwanted furniture and take the foam from the cushions, it works just as well. If you still want the high quality foam pit foam for a cheaper price, you can go to your local gymnastics facility and ask them if you can buy their old foam (if they have any). Another thing you can do to get foam if you need a little extra is while your buying the pool, just buy some sponges! Easy as that. Fill up the pool and your good to go. Oh ya and if you want it outside, put it in an open area with trees surrounding so you can stretch a tarp out at the top of the trees.

- Mountain bike foam pits and ski foam pits wouldn be much different concerning depth and everything?

use USED astroturf for your run-in, (its cheaper than new)

get a FUCKLOAD of bubble wrap and tape and make a huge pad. my friend did this like 2 years ago and it was legit as fuck.

make sure its big enough so you can land on it consistently.

Yeah for real I don't know how that can be legit.  There's no way if you land anywhere close to inverted on a "bubble wrap and tape pad" that you won't break your neck

agreed. but its still better than grass. and as a fellow ns'er pointed out, landing on your head in a foam pit can lead to harsh consequences.
