I feel the smoothcam in AE is more for stabilizing static shots rather than follow cam type applications. maybe we're thinking of different things. But Final cut pro's smoothcam filter actually works pretty well. I've used it a bunch of times, never for skiing or followcams, but more so for adding a bit of smoothness to some slight shakes to steadicam shots.
Well depending on how well your follow cam is filmed and what you're filming i suppose, which jumps, the camera is moving around a bit to keep the skier in frame up and down etc, and this fucks up the whole concept of the smoothcam, but for rails/little movement and shit its pretty nice and works more often.
