Suicide thoughts

A friend of mine from my hometown who was in the military killed himself yesterday. His brother also committed suicide a few years ago after he willfully sold bad heroine to kill this other kid. My grandfather shot himself 4 years ago and one of my skydive buddies also intentionally did it this year as well.

Unfortunately for some reason in my life, I've known way to many people who have done this to themselves and I'm wondering if this is a common thing for other people. I feel that I am old enough now to understand, and cope with, the trials that life throws. I just can't understand why anyone would feel so shut off from the world that they feel the only way out is death.

I suppose I'm not really asking anything or for any responses, and this is more of a just a rant. Modern philosophy tells us that it is human nature to think about death and to think about killing ones self, but if anyone reading this is has any serious inclination to do this, talk to someone about it. Yeah, its hard to talk about it, especially because it may be one of the hardest things you may ever discuss with someone but do it anyway. I feel if any of these individuals would have talked over their problems that they could have been convinced that life is way more special than a lot of us realize. Were all guilty of taking our lives for granted at least at some point, but we need to appreciate it much more.

Whether its selfish or not is completely irrelevant to the situation that anyone who is or was suicidal is in. They don't think of it that way. Its a mental disorder, a chemical imbalance in the brain, not something that people do for attention or because they are too weak to appreciate life. The truth is that while a lot of you may have had some experience with suicide, you don't have the necessary understanding of it to be able to possibly imagine how it works or what the thought process of a suicidal or depressed person is.

he wasnt selfish, the guy who hung himself. you cant understand what he was going through, what made him kill himself, unless you've been there.  if you really really have, you wouldn't call him selfish. of course its cowardly to us, but to them theres no other choice. some people are more strong willed than others, thats all.

just to clear something up, for all you retards out there who are responding to my or someone elses comment about suicide being selfish, do you really think that i meant it as a conscious act of selfishness?

if you steal from a store, its still being selfish but that is not how it is meant. an act of selfishness does not have to conscious, im suprised that all of you very mature members who want to ban all n00bs and hate anyone under 18 on this site would comprehend a statement like that, use your fucken heads a little more

you make a good point, but suicide is a permanent solution, to a 13 year old, no problem is to large in life to overcome, this was not his only choice. maybe you mean to him, as in from his perspective, but in reality he had every option that would all entail him living

im pretty sure the bill of rights were written, namely to give me the right to voice my opinion, and i do not succumb and silence myself to the public opinion, no, i am not afraid of what will come due to me voicing my opinion, which on this site is only karma draining, but to me, having my own opinion and voicing it is much more important then a few numbers

there is nothing factual about suicide being selfish or not, because it is entirely based upon ones viewpoints, beliefs, and experiences. i would really like you to back up your words and provide me with some valid articles pertaining to your original statement that i quoted, the one where you said it is universally accepted, and even if you do, that is just one group of conformists who do not have the power to think on their own besides a few leaders of this universal acception

see, you would be too afraid to voice your opinion, even on the internet in a way such as i have, and you have backed this up with your posts. you just fall into the category of people who would simply conform opposed to expressing their true feelings because you are afraid of the outcome. grow a backbone pussy

In Japanese culture, unfortunately even these days, committing suicide after dishonoring yourself was a respectful way to go out. Fortunately, a lot of us don't live in that kind of world and it should be okay to bring the discussion of the validness of a suicide to the table. I'm sure Spork's thoughts do not invalidate how he felt about his friend prior to his death, but how is it disrespectful to say it was a ...cop-out, a bad thing, that he took his/hers own life and caused so much grief to the loved ones, friends around? There just isn't anything respectful about taking your own life, at least that's what I think - I'm not gonna go into any "sacrifice for the greater good" stuff.

This example isn't technically a suicide but guys in times of war will throw themselves on grenades to save their friends. That in essence is taking their own life for greater good one could argue.

hahaha when a huge community of experts who are obviously smarter than both of us, and have also  dedicated their entire lives to studying depression all come together and agree that it is a real disease with tangible scientific evidence I'm going to  tend to side with them over Spork. of Newshoolers.com. You probably have an opinion on gravity too...

Do you really think I'm going to go google psychology articles for this? All I'll do is give you the definition of selfishness: stinginess resulting from a concern for your own welfare and a disregard of others .

-Killing yourself doesn't improve your welfare, you're dead.
-Its often done with complete regard for the victim's loved ones. )Even tho the person's thinking is influenced/altered by the disease they are still real thoughts)

So at the very least every single suicide defies 50% of that definition, and many suicides defy 100% of that definition. What now pussy? Hahaha by the way arguing, being wrong, and masking it as an opinion doesn't make you tough or cool.

Also, as long as you're in the mood for trying and failing to prove things, earlier you said selfishness isn't a conscious decision, whaaaa?

if you would, imagine this scenario.

your 28. your loving mother was killed in a mass murder that was blamed on your father. the government scentences him to death. your in a rush to the courthouse to stop it when you get into a brutal car crash with your soul mate and your only daughter. your the only to survive with groutesque damage done to your face. you cant bear the image of yourself. you have no relatives you know of. all of your friends now hate you beacause you spent all of your time and attention with your wife(who died). and you have no chance of marrying again not only because of your looks but you know youll never love someone again. the only thing that you have to live for is a job you hate and get treated unfairly at. you cant keep up with the morgate to your house so you end up on the streets.

whats your choice?

at least he has an opinion dippy. there are no hard based facts on suicide each case has its own unique and diverse scenerio. im not saying the disease of depression is different everytime, but the cause of it often is.

well put. its a difficult trial of life. but at the proper age you'll understand that all you can do is help to prevent it before it stops, think before you do something you'd regret, not necessarily an act of it by yourself, but being the spark to start somebodys sprial. basically be nice to everybody every time you can.

There is no reason to be suicidal. I guarantee you there have been people that have had a life 100x worse then you and didn't ever consider suicide, So people not to stop crying about there life. If your life is that bad there is people that can help you.

depression affects the brain in ways us common folk cant comprehend. but i def do agree with this statement, im pretty sure we all live pretty damn good lives compared to an HIV positive teen with no food or water living in war torn sudan or something like that...

He wouldn't give a shit about its affect on the gene pool, his whole point was that evolution has no goal. He observed the death of the weak in nature but its not like he encouraged it.

If anything he would disagree with you since the most important instinct of each species is the desire to continue that species by mating and avoiding killing each other.
