WHAT CAR SHOULD I GET?!

ok, so im ready to buy my first car. The thing is i want a car thats good for the outdoors. For example its gotta be good for a ski rack, bike rack, kayak rack, etc. something that i can take me off road (4wd) so i can get to where im climbing or biking. some cars i was thinking about was some sort of jeep, a subaru forester, or a truck (so i can toss stuff in the back and once i get a sled i can just put it in the back. The only thing with the truck is that it has to have back seats, but the thing cant be MASSIVE. ALso it must have good gas mileage. Or tell me what you guys would think would be a good ski bum car or good for the outdoors, tell me what you have got. I am looking for a used car so tell me what year would be best. Please help guys cause i dont know what i want! so lets hear it!

my brother just got a subaru impreza, those are really nice, but for you id say get a subaru forester, any subaru is gonna be good for outdoor adventures.

how much money you got?

3000+ get a mid 80's toyota pickup

2000-3000 get a late 80's/early 90's chevy stepside 1500

less than 2000 get a mazda b2200

1000 or less go for a beat ass early 80's nissan hardbody

subaru forester is on top for me right now, for a few reasons. first because the used ones are really cheap, they have good gas mileage, and ive only heard good things. but im also considering a jeep, or a truck for a sled. but im not getting a sled in the near future. but this is all great advice

id highly recommend a truck.

if you want to go offroad a forester wont cut it if you mean anything more than a field, or maybe a logging road.

truck>jeep

more room
better gas (my familys xj gets about 14 mpg)
better quality
can get a sled in the back with a long bed

ALSO! i am learning stick shift (which i would have done when i first started) but do you think its worth it to get a car with stick or automatic in the long run? or do you think that ill get tired of it? so basically, stick or automatic?

For sure. IMO they shouldn't even make automatic trans. Manual gives you so much more control over the car plus if you can drive a manny you can drive any car for the most part.

You said something about 4 wheel drive, so I would decide exactly how much off road you plan on doing, because if you're doing a lot, the forester may not cut it because its only all wheel drive. No hate on subies, i just don't think there the car for this situation. If you want to get a truck with plans of hauling a sled down the road, my only real advice would be to stay away from 90s ford/mazda rangers. The suspension is SUPER soft in the back, probably wouldn't haul a sled real well

a cherokee (xj) or a comanche (mj)

the comanches are cherokees, but they had a standard cab with either a 6 or 7 foot bed, and different rear suspension.

i don't really think a jeep is what you need though.

pros:
cheep
4wd
decent engine
solid axle

cons:
bad mpg
small
fuel injected (can't do your own work)
fairly unreliable, coolant tanks are plastic and brake all the time (we probably do 2 or 3 a year in ours)

If you don't have a vagina, then you will get a standard transmission.

My suggestions:
Toyota Tacoma (95.5-04 Xtra cab 5spd), comes in 4 or 6 cyl.
Subaru Forester (05 or older)
Subaru Impreza (02 body style)
Toyota 4runner (1990-2000), Do not get a V6 before 1996
Nissan Xterra (00-02)
Nissan Hardbody Pickup (90s)

Do NOT get a Jeep, it will break.

Bro, for the sled in the long run, nothing you are thinking of will work
my friends brother used to do a lot of sledding, and my friend now kinda inherited his fucking awesome truck. but its absolutely huge, like nothing you are looking at is big enough for a sled.

you can easly work on a fuel injected vehicle, there's not much that makes them more complicated, and they get much better fuel economy and more power.

i would say get a jeep yj, they're cheap to buy, reasonable on gas and easy to work on.

yj's aren't good on gas at all when you consider how tiny they are. But i do agree on the fuel injection thing because carbs bring the suck in the cold

4000s. I picked her up for $500. Its fwd but it hasnt takes snow no problem. if you find one in working condition by all means get it. people shit all over these cars but i love mine to death

Yeah, Jeeps don't get as bad of gas mileage as people have been saying, my family has 3 Grand Cherokees and one gets 16MPG, one get 18 and another gets about 20, so it really depends, they're a 99 (beater car now), 02 and 05 respectively, anything past 04 is ugly imo...

That, or if you want a suv sort of thing I'd go for an old wrangler. Or if you give up on 4x4, I personally think that 90's civics make the best starter cars ever. Especially if you are learning stick.
