New to the park/powder

Heya.

I've been skiing for as long as I can remember, mostly carving. Tried out some powder this christmas and it's amazing. So, I've decided to try it out but still not give up the good old slopes. Any word of advice regarding choice of skies? Would be awesome if they could be used in ze park, aswell.

If your really stoked on pow.  Buy strictly pow skis cause then your gonna have the most fun.  You'll pretty much not wanna do anything else once you've experienced it.

first of all, welcome to NS!

i don't know a whole lot about skis that can be used in the park and are still good in pow, however I have heard great things about the Line Elizabeths, which are a fatter park ski that still shred outside of pow.

and don't forget to use the search bar. such a useful tool, there's a wealth of stuff in the back catalogues of this place and it saves annoying others by creating threads which have been played out already.

best recommendation is to get a crossover pair of skis, I am a HUGE fan of the 08/09 kung fujas. They kill it in the park and bring your powder skiing form up a lot by having some float but not enough to rely on. If you want some rocker definitely go with this years kung fuja which also kills it everywhere.

like what woozy said, part of choosing skis for yourself is your height/weight, different skis come in specific sizes meant for different riders

Go for like 90-100 underfoot, anything fatter then that will hold you back in the park if you start to get into that, but you will still be able to float some pow. Where do you ski?

Dont be that guy that has elizabeths because somebody on NS told you to get them. People will see you on the hill and think you're a poser. Especially if you suck at skiing. Kung Fujas would be a good choice, so would the prophet flite, or chronic cryptonite. P4's maybe. There are a lot of good skis that are "one ski quivers", do some research.

line blends are a pretty good choice for a one ski quiver. 100mm underfoot i believe, and they should be pretty fun for both

ya. definitely heard good things about elizabeths. would have gotten some but i misread the specs on evogear. anthems are fun anyway. for this year i would pick up a pair of fairly cheap twins at your local store to learn on. you will beat the shit out of them and not care.
elizabeths are fatter than the blends at 110. 10 mm fatter. but dont get caught up in the dimensions. still pay attention to them but also look at flex and camber. do some research and look very thoroughly. i did so with my anthems and i now love them. go to evogear's site they have good info like an article on rocker. link: http://www.evogear.com/default.aspx

Buy my 169 Volkl Bridges. There great for both park and pow. Just too short for me....

Unless you live somewhere with epic deep pow all the time I would just buy some park skis with maybe 90 underfoot or something and they'll still work in pow decently enough. Just because you can ski park whenever you want but you probably won't get to ski that much powder.

Unless you are repping Jackson Hole or something, then buy some sick pow skis.

since this christmas was your first pow experience i'm going to assume you live on the east coast? at which point a normal park ski like an AR6 or line anthem or even most of the carving skis with more than a 110mm tip will work. I have used my AR6's (114mm) in 1-2 feet of pow and they work fine in both the light powder and the park. if your going to be hitting more than a foot or two look at some line elizabeth's or Volkl gotama's, which are surprisingly playful in the park for there size. a lot of the skinny park skis with reverse camber work fine in the pow no matter how deep. remeber the key for powder is to go faster instead of buying fatter skis.

First of all, thanks for the great tip. I really do appreciate it.

I'm propobly going for an all mountain kind of ski, since I propobly wont be able to do as much powder as I'd like, due to lack of snow. Hopefully I'll be able to do alteast 50% pow, 20% park and rest groomin.

I'll definitely look at the Armada AR6 and the ARV. Since I'm new to parking I might aswell try out the Line Blends, sacrificing a bit park wont hurt in the beggining I guess.

i was in the same situation last season! you should get the K2 kung fujas. i love them. there great in the powder but can still hold an edge on groomers which makes them good in the park too.

there 95 under foot so thats pretty fat but yeah there great.

Super soft, fat skis for somebody who doesnt get that much pwfder and skis groomers too? I wouldnt recommend them. Something around 90 underfoot would do a LOT better in park and be much more maneuverable. Elizabeths are great skis, but I wouldnt get them unless you knew you wanted them and WHY you wanted them. For a beginner skier they just aren't the right ski, And will hold him back in the park.

Learn to read asshole. I didnt say dont get them because people will call him a poser, I said dont get get them based on the fact that some dumb kid on NS suggested them.

Well, I looked at the AR6s last night and they seemed really sweet, especially for what I´m looking for. Thanks for the tip about testing sevral skies.. will definietly consider that. In fact, it´s a waste not doing it I guess.

maybe i just didnt notice but it would be worthwhile to mention where you ski. the amount of pow you get pretty much dictates how big of a ski you can get.

line elizabeths were a good recommendation but look into moment skis. the moment tahoe and night train could work for you but then again i dont know how much pow your getting so i dont have anything to reference too...

Yepp. Well, those 50 % really depends on the amount of snow. Can be less, can be more. So I want a ski that works in the groomers aswell, so yeah, the AR6 seems to be really sweet.
