For my Language Arts class, I have to write a persuasive essay. The essay can be about any topic we choose, and is our entire writing grade for the semester. I need a good topic to write about. I want the topic to be fairly controversial, with at least some media attention. Being NS, I'm assuming you will all say I should write why marijuana should be legal, but I'm not sure how well that would go over with my teacher.
aside from your teacher probably thinking your a pothead, this is a great topic cause theres so many factual reasons for it compared to other topics like abortions which is mostly ethics or gay rights
Which is why I want to do it. I think it would be a good topic if I do it right. You pretty much said in your post the reason I don't want to talk about gay rights or something, because it is too opinion based.
Very true. i was just asking because most people that have a hate for religion in America only seem to be directed towards Christians. But when other cultures religions come into play like Buddhism and Islam they seem to reverent towards them because they want to sound cultivated.
write it on something completely random and ridiculous... everyones going to write some bullshit about religion or abortion or weed or politics or whatever the fuck else. write about something good.
anyways, there is a huge amount of reasons I can list that explain why religion has contributed largely to how the world is today, both good, and bad. One big one, that your great graph highlights well, is what is called the protestant work ethic, which is often thought to be one of the main reasons capitalism has been so successful, which is the reason for the huge jump in technological advancements.
How about the public fear of bearded men. Their has not been a president with facial hair since Taft. Thats almost 100 years without facial hair in the oval office.
Or because of the basic principle of capitalism that provides an incentive to take risks which provides the increase in capital. The idea of capitalism perpetuates itself, religion has little to do with the success of capitalism. You want to attribute the success of capitalism to something, give credit to the creators.
You could write about racism related to outsourcing American jobs. It's just something I recently observed, and I'm sure that you could write an original paper about it.
That graph is retarded, there are so many reasons why that took place and it is not soley based on the spread of Christianity. My best guess would be because of the split of Rome and the Crusades
write about the gore file and how henry anslinger teamed up with dupont and william randolph hearst to make marijuana illegal so they could create a market for nylon.
talk about what backs up our currency and how it's illegal because of the americans with disabilties act and social security act because a blind man can't tell the difference between a $5 dollar bill and a $10 dollar bill, which violates accessibility.
talk about genetic engineering and how you can pay money to manipulate genes that can make a fetus grow to be more intelligent, have different eyesight and body features, as well as athleticism.
like said above that "graph" doesn't really say anything, it looks like someone drew it on paint, aside from the fact that this graph only looks at western society, and of course Christianity wasn't the only religion at the time, and seeing as how you are saying religion creates conditions that hamper development it is probably worthwhile to point out that the muslim agricultural revolution occured during the christian dark ages
Also, to nw_rider, religion arguably played a huge role in the success of capitalism, what you are saying is true but for it to be successful there had to be an ideological shift in the way people operated, and the protestant mentality provided this
Just going to point out that the egyptians, greeks, and romans all had their own polytheistic religions, so if anything, that graph depicts christianity's role in scientific advancement, not religion's role as a whole. not to mention that graph does not look like something that serious conclusions should be made from.
i have come to the conclusion that any type of religious discussion (ya, thats what we will call it) is futile. neither party will ever change their views, and thats the way it is. if your for religion, good for you, if your not, good for you. but if you dare have the audacity to try and tell me what i should, or should not believe in, then you are an ignorant fuck who has a misconstrued sense of hierarchy.
the graph is referring to the christian dark ages. it is not up for debate the lack of scientific progress during the dark ages, it was fucking nothing. obviously the graph isnt accurate, its just portraying an idea.
simply showing that religion impedes scientific progress. it, in no way, enhances it.
I should have put it differently, the protestant work ethic isn't the reason capitalism has been so successful, but is arguably one of the main reasons that it was able to take off the way it did
illegal immigration, healthcare, uniforms in school.
earlier this year i wrote a 15 page pursuasive essay on illegal immigration for my high school AP Lang class that was fairly easy.
Alright. I like the illegal immigration topic. If I can't write about whether marijuana should be legal or not I'll write about that. The killer is the essay has to follow a retarded format.
Does it have to be on a present day issue. If not write it on wether or not it was justified to drop the A-Bomb on Japan. I did that last year and it was fairly easy.
instead of doing your essay on religion, abortion, gay rights, capitalism, healthcare or anything else that EVERYBODY does, do something unique and something that means a lot to you. If you do it on something that you are passionate about then you will enjoy writing and therefore making your paper a whole lot better. If you're a good writer then your passion will be evident in your paper and you will get a good grade.
