Coming to shred utah

myself a few friends are flying out to utah in a little less than two weeks, staying with a friend in the ogden area. we'll be skiing snowbasin, powder, and probably snowbird or alta, depending on the lift ticket situation. we haven't booked a car rental yet, so we still need to do that.

to everybody who's been riding at these resorts, how's the snowpack/base? i was at basin last year and there was really no worry of hitting any hidden rocks/trees, etc, but this was in march. how's the weather been? are there any systems moving in that a novice weather dork like me wouldn't be able to pick up on just by looking at noaa and radar and such?

as for the car rental, would we be safe getting a mid-full size sedan, strapping out ski bags to the roof and buying tire chains are an auto store instead of paying the extra $300+ for an SUV for the week? life would be so much easier if places rented subaru outbacks...

I was able to rent Subie Imprezas from AVIS at the airport past couple years.  Not sure if they are still available this year.

i was just there skiing the cottonwood canyon resorts.  they are in definite need of more snow.  solitude had only half the mountain open.  Everybody else had pretty much everything open but there were a ton of rocks everywhere.  We all got some nasty core shots.  Still good stuff though.  We didn't go to snowbasin or powder mountain cause from what I can tell their bases were even lower and they didn't have the whole mountain/catskiing open.

hit up alta today, pretty chopped up, although you could find some decent snow in some of the trees.  Definitely in dire need of snow.  Gonna cruise to brighton tomorrow and see what that brings.

beat. this is not sounding promising. i'm starting to feel like booking a trip this early in the season was a mistake. i usually go early-mid march, and if it doesnt snow, there's at least good coverage and sunny days.

so its super thin right now which is the bad news.  The good news is PCMR is absolutely killing it with pick and kings.  They can definatley keep you busy and entertained if we dont get any snow while you are out here.  The pipe is also sweet.  I rode the Canyons the other day - they have opened their big park.  They only had 2 jumps going but plenty of jibs.  They are puting in a bunch more jumps and a few road gaps that look interesting and fun.  I imagine it will be complete by the time you get here - so that is the Park City update

^what he said.  if you dont have good snow, at least hit up a dope park because right now it seems that most mountains have fun setups

Normally any other year you'd be fine.  I think at this time last year we had pretty decent coverage, and a good amount of storms. 

but definitely try to get up to PC.  all of their parks are really fun.

hey not sure where you're staying but if you plan on skiing little/big cottonwood I recommend the Hilton Garden Inn in SLC. It's near the freeway entrance and walking distance to a couple of bars. The room rate is a little over 100 bucks a night (plus all those stupid fees) and includes a free breakfast and snowpass, good at alta, snowbird, solitude or brighton.

On another note, I just returned from my trip today and the snow wasn't too great. You can find some good snow at Solitude but the lift situation there sucks. Brighton isn't that great and while snowbird was fun the snow was mediocre. I didn't hike into the backcountry as I don't have the experience or gear necessary so I can't comment on the conditions out of bounds.

It was still great skiing the terrain that we don't have out East and overall a fun trip.
