Begginer Ski Tricks and questions

Well this is my first season in the park..and im just interested where i should start off..i live in Oregon ski at mt hood :) well i landed my first 180 landed switch and fakied out of it...so where should i go from there? switch 180? or what cuz i also want to start doing boxes and stuff so maybe some tips on that please? ohhhh and one more question! i wear a Smith Variant Brim helmet and im just wondering if any of you freestyle skiiers wear helmets with brims? or if they look good at all because the brim on the smith isnt really large.

I am an expert at answering your question because I have a helmet with a brim. Here's where you should start: you should take a run through the park, and find the feature that looks the most fun. Then do something that you think will be fun on it.

Search through the forums if you're looking for trick tips.

well after the 180,  it would probably be a good idea to get your dub cork 12 down. Thats what i did anyway.

do what i did. I took some runs through the park, and when i was just learning, i would approach a rail or box but NOT HIT IT. i just air off the side of the ramp to the rail. make sure to keep in control with a snowplow

I would say move to boxes and 360s next. Try to get more comfortable on big jumps. The faster you can get that down without flailing, you will find progression to be a little bit easier.

yea just start doing laps through the park and watch what other ppl are doing in there, how they are approaching features and how they are then executing the trick. If ppl start to see you there a lot and get to know you they will be more then helpful with giving you advice in the park. I suggest either going for a 3 or starting to work on boxes frist by just riding them straight then then gradually angling your body ont he box until you are completely comfortable sliding it sideways. The possibilities are endless good luck and have fun :)

Don't worry about getting laughed at in the park, like everyone said, everybody starts somewhere, and no matter what you'll eat shit a couple of times, so no worries, just work on your boxes and build from there.

Find a "butter" or "disco" box.  These are the boxes that are like 4 feet wide.  50/50 it the first time with your feet about shoulder width apart.  That means basically hit it going straight and ski off the other side.  Hike and do this a few times until you feel comfortable with the stance and have convinced your mind that the white HDPE top of the box is "NOT THE SAME AS SNOW".

Then try jumping on 50/50 and pivoting to 90; then pop off a little and go back 90 so that you ski away normal.  Even if you go off sideways it's not a big deal as long as there isn't a huge hole there.  

Basically this will help you get comfortable sliding a box with your weight on both feet.  If you are slipping out and landing on your hip, it is because you are trying to hockey stop on the box like you would on snow. 

Once you feel solid about the above, try jumping turning 90 in the air and landing on the box.  If that feels solid, let yourself continue to rotate so you can drop off switch just like your 180. 

That's a good progression to get you started.

one thing I have to add is please dull your edges.. i was showing some kid how to hit a box a few months ago and completely spaced on his skis and he had very sharp downhill racing skis.. grabbed an edge and ill leave the ending out so it doesnt get to your head.  But please dull them.

How long have you been skiing?  I don't do park, but I tried it when I had only been skiing for a year so I wasn't very good.  Because of that, I don't like park anymore.  So my advice to you is to be sure you're good at skiing before trying park.  Try to get good at moguls and all that.  In the end, it will help.  To me, moguls have made me a much better skier.  They improve your balance and stability.  So just don't get into the park scene too fast.

I do some park now, but I find going fast, moguls, and powder to be more exhilerating than rails and boxes.  I do jumps though but that's all.  I get bored of rails and boxes.  Plus, I live in Maryland, and my resort in PA has the worst park in the world.  And not all people on this site ski park and only park.  I'm on this site because I like the community... for the most part.

I know, right.  I used to be all in the park scene... Todd Wallnutz bandwagon and everything.  And then I went to Park City this April where it snowed like 60 something inches, and I'm never going back to park again.  Powder is just amazing.
