To all photographers and filmers

I'm starting an online magazine for on-hill photographers and filmers and need your opinions on what you'd like to see. The site will have interviews with professionals and amateurs, how to's and DIY, behind the scenes of photos and videos, reviews of products and everything will be geared specifically for skiing and snowboarding.

So for all of you photographers and filmers, what would you like to see? I'd like to update it frequently so the more ideas the better.


I also need people to interview so if you know an amateur who stands out from everyone else send me an example of their work and a place I can contact them.

As a complete photography n00b, I'd like to see your perspective on lighting (i.e., how to be creative, cheap solutions, using shadows, etc.)

That's pretty ambitious.

It'll be hard to compete with the zillion other photo and/or snow sites, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it comes out. Why not just use an RSS aggregator to have real-time updates of your favorite blogs?

I've never come across a blog specifically for this. Most of the blogs I frequent never mention anything about shooting on hill let alone in cold temperatures.

I also want it to be more than just a blog. I'd like people to interact and feel like they can come there to ask questions and get a more mature and professional response than other places. *Cough Cough*

Lots of tips and advice, and lots of work. Maybe examples with descriptions of what they specifically did to acquire that look in the photo.

DIY sections for sure, how to spend less to still get a good shot, education sections on some funky tricks of the trade. And definitely help the little guys out there get noticed (maybe me?? :))

and idk if you said this, but ski/board/winter focused would be sick, and summer action stuff for sure.

This sounds like it could be a really cool website. Interviews would be nice, like ask pro photographers what essentials they take with them to the mountain, or what setup they have, or any photo video question/discussion topic you could think of. Also some tips on how to avoid amateur mistakes whatever they may be. im just throwing out some ideas, good luck on the site.

All great ideas so far. The site is actually http://snowtographers.com so it is exclusively for winter related photo and film. I might do a few articles on how to keep the skills sharp in the summer or how to prepare for the season ahead when the time comes.

As soon as CommonWealth suggested it I started writing an article about beginner lighting. I started with equipment but will add more parts as I get the time. Check it out.

I do have a few interviews lined up with a few pros. I won't name any names but they're people you'll recognize. I also have a couple unknowns who I think are very deserving. What questions do you guys want me to ask?

And the site isn't technically live yet. I want to get more information and refine the navigation before I start marketing it but I'd love to hear your comments on the articles. You don't even have to sign up but please do if you want to stay informed on future things.

I will be doing user rated photo/video of the week and then a featured photo/video of the week. There will also be behind the scenes where we get the photographers/filmers perspective on how the set it up, what equipment, techniques and a back story.

Sounds like and awesome idea, and it looks great so far! and a great opportunity to develop a resource for those of us who are aspiring photogs and videographers.
On a personal level, I would like to see an forum/user gallery where amateurs can submit work and receive critiques from other users.
A tips/tricks of the trade type of situation would be cool, as would a weekly installment of a professional how-to article. However, I don't think it should be limited to the technical aspects of shooting and or filming, ideally cover everything from purchasing equipment, to setting up a shot, to getting work published or recognized.
The bigger the names you get on there, the more noise there will be, the likes of Mattias Fredriksson, Jordan Manley, Paul Morrison, or any notable ski photographer/filmer will certainly generate more of an interest and more of a reputation.
And as with any interactive web site, a clean and user friendly interface will never hurt.

i realize that you said on-hill but i personally think that super like random shots og urban riding are sick. like put skiers/snowboarders into places you wouldnt expect them.

Of course we would do that as well. I want to touch on everything from gear to techniques to travel. I know I've had questions which haven't been easily answered and I'd like to take the collective wisdom of many and put it all in one place.

You guys like the site so far? Any thoughts on how to do the navigation or anything else in general?

a forum would be nice but i think how-to's would be great. everything from lighting to editing pictures would really simplify it all and draw more people to ski photography IMO

Beautiful, I just joined.

My only gripe is that besides the name (which is very good, and very descriptive) there isn't much in the site that screams SNOW!

I think it needs some nice snowy backgrounds or banners. Even better would be huge photos of photographers taking pictures in the snow.

If this idea works it could be cool but there are plenty of sites out there. The one that sticks out in my mind is ASCartel.com but thats not huge and a pain that you have to have a subscription.

Besides that I'd like to see lighting diagrams on urbans, park shoots, and powder stuff. Also video stuff like Chase Jarvis does but more in depth but not overly boring.

great idea man i really like it.

one thing that would be cool to see as a feature or something would be a sort of "day in the life" of a photographer/videographer.  just like a video or pictures following around a filmer/photog showing how they get ready to head out, what they look for on the hill, where they start, etc.  sometimes when i was shooting on the hill i felt like i was such a beginner just standing in a spot, taking the lens cap off, and shooting.  i felt like i needed more preparation.

have a photo that's really good, and then have like pointers to say how you got the photo the way it is eg lighting, angle, shutter speed etc

I've thought about that but I was looking for someone to actually follow. My idea was have like 5 photographers and filmers each and have them do specific areas and do it on a weekly basis or something like that. A lot less work for them and we can update it more often.
