So, for most of my life, my grandmother has had this friend who is significantly older than she is. His name is Don. He lives on my like, oval shaped cul-de-sac, and I see him from time to time. What a nice old man he is! Hilarious, not deaf, easy-going, old farmer. He grows a massive garden every year, and gives lots of produce to everyone in our township, zuccini, squash, tomatoes, apples, you name it, he grows it. En masse, too. He even has flowers, a walking bridge, waterwheels, a mini waterfall, and lots of birdhouses. His property really is a visual and gastronomic gem of my neighborhood.
Recently, old Don's had some problems. He had something to the effect of a stroke. Miraculously, he recovered with few mental problems. He can still talk, hear, same personality, everything. But his mobility is pretty impaired, and getting around is a challenge. The other night me and my grandmother stopped by and made him dinner, and ate with him. We discussed alot, caught up, whatever. Then my grandmother brought up the garden;
"So ya gonna grow another garden this year?"
"Well, I don't think so, its hard for me to get around, and I'm not quite sure I could keep up with it"
"Oh, thats really a shame. We can bring you some tomatoes and...."
Then I piped in. I had always carried an interest in gardening, the ability to coax plants into producing beautiful and delicious vegetables, flowers, herbs, and fruits. But, lacking the knowledge to start a garden of any kind, it was always a desire who's thirst I never thought I would quench. So, building from this interest, I said;
"Well, Don, you know, me living a stone's throw from your house, I could certainly come help you with your garden. I've always wanted to learn the tricks of the trade.."
"YOU WOULD?" The smile on his face was the warmest I had ever seen.
"Certainly."
The convo continued, I took some beats and cottage cheese home. I talked to my grandma a few days later? She said that he had told all of his friends and family about "the good lad that's gonna help me on my garden". I'm really stoked both to help Don have a garden for what may be his last year, and learn a lot of great things on the way. Some of that knowledge will be left with me and only me in the event of his death. Pretty cool.
So basically, what good things have you done lately?
